I currently have a Rem 700 Police in 300 win mag. I was wanting shorten the barrel from 26 to 22 for various reasons and add a muzzle brake. What will be the pros and cons of doing this?

Thanks

Re: Shorten Barrel?

I'm no pro but I'm guessing you would have a great loss in velocity and I'm sure the recoil would be brutal without a muzzle break... I wouldn't cut the barrel any shorter on a magnum caliber rifle if I were gunna go that route id get a smaller caliber or re chamber it to .308...

Re: Shorten Barrel?

There was an article floating around a while back and I *think* it said that 22" is the lowest effective length on the .300WM. If that's what you want to do, do it.

Me personally, I would lean towards what chriso said and get a .308.

Re: Shorten Barrel?

I have a 300wsm w/ a 20" barrel speed is lost, I will go with somewhere 22-24" when the time comes.

What I have found is that you will have to play with different powders that are not the norm, and compromise on speed and pressure.

good luck

oh yeah I still have not found a combo i like yet

Re: Shorten Barrel?

Pro's: better balance, better maneuverability, less recoil, easier self-spotting.

Con's: louder, more drop, more drift, less energy. (due to loss of some MV, probably about 100-150 fps).

I'm not too keen on heavy recoil, so I'd do it in a heartbeat.

My 22" 30-06 starts 208/210s at 2700 fps. So, I'm thinking a 22" 300 WM should be able to make 2850-2900 fps.

Overall it will still be a lot of performance in a user-friendly package.

Could you explain the less recoil part?

Sorry, missed the part about the brake, but yes you are right a brake would reduce recoil. However with a 22" barrel and a brake, the muzzle blast will be significant. I would just get a .308 if you want something with that short of a barrel, you would just be wasting powder with .300.

Re: Shorten Barrel?

Don't underestimate the LOUDER part. Especially is you plan to ever hunt with the rifle, without everyone in your party wearing ear protection. This may not be practical on all hunts.

Good luck
