It's my understanding that high quality .22 barrels are machined so the bore is tightest right at the muzzle, and that this is critical to accuracy.

I'm putting a MKII together for my daughter, and I'd like to cut the barrel back from 21" to 16". Does anyone know if Savage actually does machine their barrels this way? Am I going to ruin the accuracy by chopping it down?

BTW, I have one of these I use as my trainer. It's shoots just under 1 moa with Eley Target.

I've got a mate that knocked a few inches off his to make it a little easier to get it out the window of spotlighting rig. Not sure how much shorter he went but he's only got good things to say about it since. I very much doubt a mass produced $300 gun has anything high tech going on like that.

Tim take a look at Savage MKII FV/SR
might help u out,
like has been said, don;t know how savage runn there barrels. i also believe, mast produce barrels from them will be ok to cut back.
but like DFOOSKING said, good crown is very important, i also stand behine, that statement. a good smith that will take the time to do it right, is worth the extra monies in the long run.
good luck an keep us posted on the out come.

I'd forgotten about slugging the barrel. I may give that a try and see if I can feel anything. My smith will put a nice crown on it while cutting it down and threading it for my .308 can, so it should be as good as it can be.

It's probably going to get a pink or purple Hello Kitty paint job (Daughter is 5), and I'll have my mom make a fake suppressor mirage cover in some goofy fabric. She'll be be coolest kindergartener in her school.

As an aside, I'm running my TB 30-P1 on my current MK II trainer. It's the quietest gun I've ever heard with Eley ammo.

I'm only 4 years younger than you, and we're about to adopt #2. Being an older parent makes me keenly aware of how fast this is all going, and helps me slow down and enjoy her while she still likes me. I take nothing for granted.

Go get another one. It'll keep you young, or kick your ass as in my case.
