Hello All,

I have recently come into a stock Win M70 rifle with a heavy varmit barrel(.308) in stainless steel. It is factory length, 26 inches from the point where the brass sit flush in the chamber. I am not sure of the true length or how to actually measure that length as I am new to rifles.

The previous owner took off the front sight and there are the two little screw holes.

Can I just have a gunsmith shorten the barrel right behind the two holes and recrown it?

Will this affect the accuracy of the barrel?

What is the crown degree if it needs to be recrowned after cutting?

Any other options to filling in the holes?

The rifle shoots great right now, I just don't like the look of the holes.

Thanks

Jerry

A 26", .308 is a great candidate to be shortened. If you have sight holes to get rid of, now you have 2 reasons to shorten it.

Re-crowning a rifle correctly will not hurt accuracy and you can discuss a crown angle with your smith.

I have a Rem. VS in .308 and a VLS in .204. Both had 26" barrels. I had them both shortened to 23" and recrowned with a target crown. The accuracy is still as good or better than before and they are a lot easier to handle and carry.
