Shortening:Ideal (?) barrel length for 300 WinMag

I have a Stainless CRF, 300 win mag. Barrel is 26". Been thinking of making this a 'pack' rifle. I have a .30-Suppressor rated upto 300 Win Mag. Via hand loads: heavy 30-cal bullet at moderate velocity.

What would you suggest for the 'ideal' barrel length?

Experimenting with a 20” 300WM as we speak. Progress will be posted here http://www.snipershide.com/forum/ubbthre...976#Post2915976 Be patient as its been slow moving for a number of unrelated reasons such as I wanted to upgrade my chrono and my optic is currently at the factory being upgraded but expect some progress towards the end of Feb.

Bear in mind I have the ability to build my own rifles so if this dosnt work out its going to be much less expensive for me to rebarrel or switch to another caliber than it would be for somebody who needs to pay a gunsmith. At the end of the day if it turns out to be a turd all I’m out is time and the cost of a blank that I get at a discount so again this may not be a wise move for everybody but I’m intrigued by the idea of challenging conventional norms regarding barrel length.

As for the suppressor, most 30 Cal cans rated for 300WM specify a specific barrel length (often 24 or 26”) so before ruining your can contact the manufacturer and see what they say.
Another thing to consider is if you reload or not. If you do you can gradually work up a load that will give you the velocity you desire but you also may hit a point where you are pushing safety before reaching your desired velocity.

Thus far I have been pleasantly surprised by the velocity of FGMM 190 and will next be moving to 230 Bergers with Retumbo and H1000 to start. I just picked up a box of 208 A-Max and will be working those after the 230’s.

And Boltripper is correct about barrel life so account for that as well.
