Should I change my current 6.5cm to 308?

Little back story. I am currently having a 6.5cm built by Jon Beanland. I have a sps tactical 308 that I had planned to shoot out to 600 yards until my creedmoor is finished. My buddy is selling his Custom 7saum and I'm considering buying the rifle. If I buy this rifle I will sell the 308 I currently have. Would it be better to Keep the current 308 and 6.5 creedmoor build or buy the 7saum for hunting\target shooting and change the 6.5cm to a 308 to shoot F class 6-1000 yards on occassion? Either way I plan on keeping a 308 in the safe due to the amount of ammo and brass I have to that rifle. So basically I'm asking Cutom 308\7saum combo or stick with sps tactical and 6.5cm build. I don't know much about the 7saum, but it appears that where the 308 falls off the 7saum could pick up.

All you need is a .308 Win. Hell, a .223 Rem could do it for you.

7mm SAUM would be a stupid idea for 600 yards and less.


I'd recommend a .308 and .223 for your purposes over a .308 and a 7mm SAUM or 6.5 Creed.

I have no idea why you would even need the 308. Stay with your 6.5CM build and get a 223 for practice inside 400 yds. No need for a 7 SAUM unless you need to hit something really hard at a distance.

308 will cover everything under 600.

That said, for punching paper I'd choose 6.5CM over 308 every single day of the week. And twice a day on weekends.

Keep 6.5 creed custom

There is no reason to have more muzzle blast, recoil an costs from a 7saum at 600m.

A fast twist 223 would also serve you well for target shooting to 600m

Everybody I know that has or had a 308 and built a 6.5 never shoots 308 anymore. The 6.5 does everything the 308 does and does it better with the exception of subsonics (which is very specialized).

I own and have owned other 308's, have a 260 which ballisticly is identical to 6.5Creedmoor and I built a 7SAUM as my long range hunting rig that I use in Colorado. So I have experience in every caliber in question. My vote is keep the 6.5 build going and buy the 7SAUM and shit can the 308. You can sell all the 308 stuff you have and put that money towards the other calibers. That 7 shooting 180 Bergers matches the trajectory of a 338 Lapua shooting 250 grain bullets. Way more gun than a 308 or 6.5. And the 6.5 dry humps the .308 into submission. Trust me do it.

I will say a 7SAUM at under 600 is overkill though. But it puts game down hard.

I shoot my 260 for most every match, sometimes just a 6br for everything under 1000.
If I'm pissed and want to hurt shit, I shoot the 7 saum.

Not true! I have shot my 308 since I got started with the Creedmoor's.

About 100 rounds in 2 years that is!

You have been given very good advice. I have had each of the listed calibers and will go to a 6.5 almost everytime.

I would keep the 308 and for sure get the Creedmoor built. The SAUM is a great case in any of it's iterations, so get one too. Let's see, we have spent about $3000+. That was fun. NEXT!

Save the barrel life on the 6.5s for when you NEED it...hunting or competition. That's why I say 223 and 308 is a better combo for somebody that's just shooting 600 yards.

Say you shoot Lapua 155s at 600 out of your .308. That's 3.5 Mrad of elevation and 1.2 Mrad of wind for 10 mph full value.

Let's say you shoot Hornady 140 gr Amax out of the creed. You get 3.4 and 1.1.

If you can shoot the difference...


Meanwhile a .223 gets you something that is cheap to shoot and is fairly competitive with the big brothers with the right load. The cheaper your ammo, the more you can shoot! If rather shoot .223 than look at a 7 SAUM.

While I agree the 6.5 is a superior round, it just isn't going to offer the OP any real advantage over his .308 at the ranges he shoots. It's going to wear a barrel faster. I shoot a .260 in competition but don't shoot it much otherwise. It simply costs too much and components are impossible to find most of the time; especially Berger Hybrids.

I agree with tyler I have a 260 and 308 and I shoot the 308 more simply because I have and can get bullets in bulk even now. But what do I know I just got a 7 STW, I hate this this habit I have
