By all means get the Vortex. I'm running the Razor, but have heard great things about the Viper HD. You can't beat their warranty and customer service. If there's ever an issue (I've never had one with their products), Vortex will go the extra mile to make you a happy customer.

For that price I would also consider the Leupold mark IV with a TMR reticle. I have seen several go for $750 used. I had a razor and in my opinion it is too heavy and bulky. It all just depends on what you plan to do with it. If your just taking it to the range in the back of the car it might be fine.

Is the Leupold really that much noticeably lighter or smaller overall?

I have both and the ability to see trace with the vortex blows the leupold away. We have multiple leupolds and vortexes in our group of shooters and the leupolds pretty much stay at home. We packed in one spotter elk hunting this year. We took the vortex.
