I have this rifle. I want to know what the most accurate round is. Grain isnt important to me. Just accuracy and distance. Thanks

I have PCM X-Tac and Hotshot .223 FMJ

Both seem like they could be better... Could very well be me and not the load but if anyone has put the time in trying a bunch of the ammo out there and has done all the homework i would like to know. I would also like the round to be relaodable. thanks

Re: Sig 516 AR 5.56 .... seni auto

Well first your rifle isn't exactly a precision rifle, so spending a dollar a round on match ammo may be a waste.

You have a 1:7 barrel which will let you fire a wide variety of ammunition. I would suggest trying something like the Black Hills 69, or 75-77 grain match ammo. Heavier weight ammo like the 75 and 77 grain hollow point match will provide you with longer effective range.

As for the hotshot, the stuff I purchased won't group, I wish I hadn't wasted my money on it.

Your 516 has a 16" barrel with a 1 in 7" twist. So it will probably do well with a fair range of bullet lengths. Although increasing weight generally corresponds to increasing bullet length, it is more the length than the weight that is an issue with regard to accuracy and twist rate. Your 516 should be able to handle anything from 55 to 60 gr, up to 77 or even 80 gr. There are MANY previous posts that discuss accuracy issues with various ammunition. The bottom line is that you will need to test a few different rounds in your specific rifle in your hands to see what it likes the best. And it may not be exactly the same as another seemingly identical 516. I spent a lot of $$$ and time trying to answer the same question for a Sig 556 DMR (I basically think of it as an "entertainment fee" because I had a lot of fun doing it). If interested, you can see how many I tested and how wide the range of results was here:

With your weapon, I would suggest trying the following:

Hornady 55 gr SP (relatively inexpensive)
Black Hills 68 and 77 gr Match
Federal Gold Match 69 and 77 gr

There are, of course, MANY others from which to choose. But in general, the Black Hills and FGM are among the better commercial loads available in terms of accuracy. Their price on the other hand, is markedly higher. You get what you pay for IMO. Try a few different kinds and see what it likes. Good luck.
