Advanced Marksmanship Sighting-In with FFP

Okay, if I missed someone else's thread on this topic, feel free to hit me on the back of the head and direct me accordingly, but I have a question regarding sighting-in a FFP scope...

I have the new IOR 3.5-18x50 FFP MIL/MIL scope and am planning on sighting it in at 100 yards. Should I start with 18x and consider it sighted-in or should I shoot groups at each magnification point?

Follow-up on the question is after what grouping do you worry about setting the zero stop?

Re: Sighting-In with FFP

Rarebreed already answered the main question here. Just zero it in and it doesn't matter what magnification level you're at. The scope's magnification setting has nothing to do with your POA/POI, outside of the ability to accurately aim in on a distant target. If you're experiencing a shift, then your scope is defective and needs to go back to the manufacturer.

You may feel 18x is a bit much for 100yds but that is really personal preference. Set your zero stop after its sighted in good and you're satisfied with it.

If possible, set your zero stop so you can go .5mil below your zero. This will give you plenty of wiggle room in case you come across a significant altitude/temperature change and need to adjust accordingly.

And from one 8531 to another, welcome to the forum. S/F

Quick caveat, after you zero, change power and fire another group. If teh group shifts, then return the scope. Old variables and cheap varibles will shift zero when you change power settings. That was the primary reason that a variable was not chosen as the scope for the M24 in the 80s.

Just a thought.

I agree with this. It's not likely to be an issue with a quality scope, but I always check to be sure.

Your post made me curious. What does it matter? I did not know there was a relationship between groups and zero stop, unless you can't zero, and therefore, don't understand where to set the stop.
