Sidearms & Scatterguns Silencer or No silencer? S&W M&P 9

I traded around today for a new S&W M&P 9 that came with two barrels. One is the standard 4.25" barrel, and the other is an @ 4.75" barrel that is threaded with a thread protector.

Now, I don't own a silencer, but have utilized them professionally on various firearms in the past. I have not really considered buying a silencer for a pistol, because I really don't have a use for one.

However, a friend of mine who shoots race guns said that I should compensate the 4.75" barrel and perform a Burwell Trigger job on the M&P and shoot competitively. I, on the other hand, don't have time to compete, but am opening myself up to the possibilities.

What are your thoughts?

I was thinking "Hey ... I can have two barrels for the price of one, and have a good shooter!" That was my logic in the trade. Well, that and the fact that I got it for $425 in trade items.

My opinion; every barrel should be threaded, and every threaded barrel should be canned.

Go for it. An AAC ti-rant will fit the bill nicely. If you dont, I would be interested in the threaded barrel.

Compensating an otherwise plain M&P 9mm has no real place in USPSA and none whatsoever in IDPA.

If you're not going to get a can, turn that good deal into a smoking deal by selling that threaded barrel to recoup a quick $80-$100.

Dunno ... sounds a bit "rims on a Yugo" to me. But, then again, I haven't gotten all swept up in the M&P hysteria, either.

Of course it would only be the base pistol for the build. I'm talking mag well installation, grip stippling, and a Burwell action job to start off with. Not to mention the Reflex Rear Sight. Race guns have been made from the base M&P.

Speed Shooter Specialty makes the magwells and sells a lot of accessories for them.


After all, if a Glock can be made into a race gun then the M&P would be an improvement on it.

Also, M&Ps compete quite well.

I'm only pointing out that a threaded barrel is a drop in the bucket for all the stuff needed to make a feasible compensated/open pistol.

Don't forget that you'd also need to be running 9mm hotter than +P to make Major power factor like the rest of the USPSA OPEN pistols. You'd also want an optics rail & c-more/optic to be competitive. IDPA doesn't have any division where the comp is allowed.

The M&P 9/40 Pro is huge in competition just like the Glock 34. The shorter standard/tactical not as much.

i love how right after you mentioned a female shooter, nobody responded. i just picked up an m&p 9 today. hope you are enjoying yours.

can it and enjoy it. (if you have the same problem as me-not enough hours in a day/enough days in a weekend)

if competition is what you want, buy a competition gun.

I would go with the can - you will not be disappointed. Plus if the libs get their agenda passed, inevitably suppressors will be a casualty of any new legislation.

if you do decide to can it, sell the other barrel for cash towards the can.
