Suppressors SilencerCo Omega First Round Failure - What went wrong?

So after nearly a year I got my SiCo Omega out to the range. Had a catastrophic failure / seperation on the first round... wondering what went wrong?

Can was Direct Threaded onto HawkHill Barrel cut by Josh over at PVA. I am confident that the thread were true. I ran the can down tight by hand, checked visually (boresight) and verified with cleaning rod. I had good clearance. I wanted to see if I was going to get a POI shift and then check velocity with my Magnetospeed.

During first shot I felt a TON of recoil and looked to see most of the can missing. The End Cap Brake and baffle stack landed about 85 yards down range. It doesn't look like there was any damage to end cap brake or baffles.

I am thinking it's a bad weld?

Let me be clear on something. I can't see the photos. You said the brake and the can were down range but you said it was direct threaded on?


So did you have it on an ASR brake and then just tightened that down by hand?


I don't know but with an ASR brake installed that needs to be securely mounted to the barrel and then the can is attached to that. If I'm reading that right I could see some error coming from not having the brake installed correctly in the barrel.


Now if it was a pure direct thread and it blew off I have no idea.


You problem sounds like people who install the brake correctly but don't lock down the ASR mount correctly.

Direct thread means no ASR brake. Looks like a bad weld. SilencerCo should take care of you.

Yes it was pure direct thread... No Brake, No ASR.

The Direct Thread adapter and outer tube (top of photo 1) was still firmly attached to rifle. The brake and most of the baffle stack (bottom of photo 1) was lunched down range. It's like most of the inside came out.

I called SiCo and they asked I FedEx it back on my dime for them to evaluate. Hoping it's a quick fix.

Sico has the best customer support of any company i have ever dealt with. Im sure if its their issue, they will fix it. Unless something has changed.

Definitely a broken weld, that's pretty clear from the pictures. I'm disappointed that SilencerCo is making you pay to ship it back with such an obvious internal failure, if you sent them those pictures. Did you shoot some magnum round through it that it wasn't rated for?

I should have mentioned that... Factory Hornady 6.5 Creedmoor. Mv was 2740 pre suppressor over 10 rounds.

Omegas had a lot of failures but usually it's the mount. Seems like in this case they have a bad batch as this guy also had the same issue with a 300blk

Wow, I have no idea that there were this many failures... seems like if it is a known issue that they should at least send me a label.

I have two SiCo cans and have wondered myself if the ASR issue is that wide spread. I've gotten mixed opinions. Haven't had any issues yet (fingers crossed). Makes you wonder though.

When did you get this omega? I haven't even fired mine yet, just picked it up after the 11 month wait.

Well damn I have waited 10 months already. If mine is a pile of junk I will be seriously butt hurt about it.

My octane 45 has been perfect but I understand they are way different.

OP- sorry to hear about your troubles; it sounds like there was a defect in the can, and I expect SiCo will make it right.

Regarding those who are concerned about the ASR mount; while not an issue in this case, I can say that I have been using ASR mounts on a few different SiCo cans (Specwar 762, Omega, Hybrid) on a fairly wide variety of hosts over the last several years, and not had any problems that were not user-induced. While I'm not saying that all ASR mounts/adapters are perfect, I can confidently state that it is a well-designed mounting system that does what it's supposed to do with minimal fuss.

My one user-induced issue to date occurred just the other day with my Omega... I over-tightened the can (with the ASR module installed) onto the brake/mount, and couldn't get it loose by hand. I ended up unscrewing the can from the ASR module while attempting to remove the suppressor from the host, as the single-finger width of the ASR locking ring wasn't letting me get enough grip to get things loosened up. Once I got home, I grabbed one of the little spanner wrenches that SiCo included in the box, and popped the ASR module loose from the brake. Easy-peasy, and 100% my fault. I now have one of those little spanners in my range bag in case it happens again.

happened to me too. i find that if I mount it to a cold barrel it is more likely to happen than warm barrel. i keep all suppressor tools with me at all times just in case, but have never had this issue on a warm barrel.

I feel for you OP. What a downer. First shot after waiting all that time...I would be heartbroken.

I guess I understand SiCo not wanting to pay for a shipping label until they diagnose the issue. That gets to be an expensive gesture when they can't rule out user error (definitely not saying there was any user error here). Shipping a can with proper insurance isn't exactly cheap. I sure hope SiCo steps up and makes this right, beyond the obvious warranty repair.

Hopefully this isn't a sign of slow times and things to come for SiCo. This is a first that I have heard and/or experienced personally from them, that they ask the customer to mail back on their own dime!

Looks like crappy welding all over. I'm not a professional welder, but I've seen a enough fusion welds break to not trust them to something meant to contain pressure. Probably done on a lathe with no filler to prevent having to machine the piece to fit in the tube.

Update: So it's back at SiCo now. They said that they will recore the can and have it sent back next week.

Tomorrow will mark ten months I have been waiting for the phone call saying come and get it. Purchased this very same Omega. Has anyone asked the company if they have found a trend or failure rate with this model? Or am I placing to much faith in the system? I don't want to jump on the doom and gloom train but someone tell me the manufacture will stand up and take responsibility and honor their customers.

If your can breaks sico will take care of you just like they are this guy. Omega is a great can, don't worry about it needlessly.

I bought my first Sico can back in January of this year, a Saker asr 556k. I sure hope they don't have the issues that I've heard of with their other cans, I know they have a great warranty and are good about taking care of customers.

I should have stated that... 24" Hawhill Shooting 6.5 CM around 2750 Mv.

This wasn't an ultra short SBR or a Magnum load.

I've been hammering my Omega for several years on everything from a 8.5" 300BO to a 10.5" .556 to a 300wm that it lives on. Thousands of rounds through it and it's still running great!

I'm surprised about having to send it to them on your dime. Mine had excess POI shift when I first got it and they had FedEx pick it up from the ranch and it was home with a new core in about 8 days. Didn't cost us a penny. You're going to love it. Don't let this glitch sour you on a great can.

My brothers omega is still going strong, glad sico is taking care of the can. 10 month wait and a failure on the first shot has got to be disappointing though. all the anticipation and pop goes the can.. sucks. paying return shipping also sucks, when it clearly is a manufacturing issue discovered on the first round.
