I recently decided to get into USPSA shooting in the Carry Optics divison. I bought a CZ P10F and a Leupold Delta Point Pro (what a piece of shit) to start off with. I prefer a very aggressive grip texture on a gun. Especially when moving and shooting multiple targets. The “skateboard” stick on grip tape is ok, but with any amount of actual competition use, it’ll move eventually come off. I decided to add Silicon Carbide to my grip frame. This is basically a much better and permanent version of the skateboard tape. I think it turned out extremely well, especially since it was my first attempt at this modification. There really isn’t anything I would have done differently other than using the next size more aggressive grit (this would be too much for most people). The gun stays put solid in your hand now, no matter if your hands are sweaty. I will most likely do this on all my competition pistols going forward.

That turned out really nice! Would you mind describing the process and tools/materials used?

I think I have some larger and sharper grit if you want to try some. I had tried it on some 1911 grips many years ago and it didn't hold up. I think it's due to something I did wrong during application.

I used the 60 grit on this one. They make a 36-40 grit that I may use the next time. As I said above, the 60 would be plenty for most people. Especially those that aren’t using the gun for competition. I just prefer a very aggressive grip texture.

On this one, I used a dremel wheel to lightly sand down the factory texture that was on it so it would be a smooth surface to start with. I then used blue painters tape to tape off the entire gun other than where I wanted the grit to be. The taping process if very important if you want the sharp clean lines. I wiped it all down with alcohol then let it dry several times making sure to get all the oil/solvents off. I used JB Weld for the adhesive. I’ve seen a lot of people use various clear epoxies and I don’t believe they hold up very well over time. I think this is the problem most people have with it not lasting over time. I mixed up the JB Weld and applied it with a foam/sponge type brush. It’s just one of those arts/crafts brushes. I applied a decent coat. I think most people try to get it too thin and it doesn’t have the ability to hold much of the grit media. I just used the brush to smooth it out nice and uniform. JB Weld will “self level-self smooth” if it’s mixed right and it’s not too cold. Just apply it, brush it a bit, then let it set a couple minutes and it’ll be smooth as glass.

I then just started sprinkling on the grit media (liberally). I sprinkle it on, then lightly tap it down with the tip of my index finger. You want to pack the grit media down into the adhesive. Not just let it coat the top layer. This part is very important. Then just repeat the process. Sprinkle, tap down, sprinkle, tap down over and over. I did this process for about 30 min.

I then hung it up and let it set for 2hrs before carefully removing the tape. If you want to ultra sharp clean lines, the taping process and the removal are very important. Go slow on the removal. Pull the tape out/away from the adhesive line. Hold the tail that you are pulling at a 45 degree angle from the grit line. Don’t pull it in the same direction as your line is running.

Then just let it cure for 24hrs before you really handle it. I take an old toothbrush and brush off any loose grit that is still clinging to it.

Hope this helps. If anyone has any questions, let me know. Be glad to help.

I still prefer stippling, at least on plastic pistols. I can get some pretty aggressive stippling that is still comfortable for carry.

My P-09 stays locked in without much effort if I don't fuck up my grip out of the holster.

    Did I hurt your feelings?

You clearly haven’t been around here long enough. Seems like I may have hurt yours. Incase I didn’t, let me try again. This thread isn’t about stippling. Nobody gives a hot fuck about your stippling or what you prefer. This is not a carry pistol. It is for competition. Nobody gives a fuck what is comfortable for you to carry. This thread is about silicon carbide modifications. So....what the fuck are you doing here blabbing about stippling? Read more and post less. We will all benefit from it.

Fuck your silicon carbide. You don't own the forum. If I want to leave my opinion here I damned well will. I wasn't talking about my carry pistol anyway, dumbass.
