Single stage v. 2-stage trigger

Re: Single stage v. 2-stage trigger

I like single-stage better for long-range precision shooting but only because the hammer-drop has to be a surprise for me to get off my best shot. 2-stage is great on my AR ot AK for faster, shorter range shooting.

Re: Single stage v. 2-stage trigger

I absolutely love a two-stage trigger. I like knowing when the rifle will go bang.

I have both, but the 2-stage are vastly preferred.

My 2 ounce Anschutz trigger is the epitome of trigger engineering.

What type of rifle? What type of shooting?

Re: Single stage v. 2-stage trigger

Ok. Here is my opinion, worth every single penny you paid for it.

To me, long range tactical means that you want some measure of safety on the trigger, but that you want it to break, on demand. If I am wrong, stop reading right now.

Ok, you sort of agree with my definition. By a degree of safety, I mean that you do not want to run a rifle that will fire when you give it a nasty look, in other words a "hair trigger." But you do want it to go bang exactly when YOU want it to go bang.

As riflemen, we do not subscribe to the idiotic notion that a rifle firing should come as a surprise to to the shooter; that's for infants and air softies, in my opinion.

I like two stage triggers for that type of shooting, accurate and deliberate. The first stage is taken up, and it can be a few pounds, that is your "safety," and then you come to a stop and you can hold there with no problems. The second stage is very light, just a few ounces and when you are ready to go, you know EXACTLY when the trigger will break; it will break on your order/wish/movement. If you want, you can pull right through a two stage trigger.

Re: Single stage v. 2-stage trigger

A two stage is great on a semi auto and a military or tactical gun. When you hit
the disco the added spring weight will bring your trigger from say a 3 lb to a 4.5
pound pull. That 1.5 extra pull is the stop you feel when hitting the second stage.
You can release the trigger when up against the second stage and it will return to
it's resting position. The Trigger and disco springs on an ar can be altered some to tune the trigger to your liking. They've been around awhile, My 1896 swede came
with one.

+1

Single stage maybe for 3-gun and short range,
Two-stage for long-range.
Then, again, personal preference is probably most important. Try a few top notch sample of each type.

Re: Single stage v. 2-stage trigger

A well designed 2 stage trigger is much safer than a single stage trigger. If the 2 stage trigger is well designed the sear engagement can be .1" before first stage takeup. With .1" sear engagement an accidental discharge by a blow to the weapon ( or a drop test ) is almost unthinkable. It is not until the trigger reach 2. stage that the sear engagement is similar to a single stage trigger. As a result a 2 ounce 2 stage trigger can be much safer machanically than a 2 pound single stage trigger.

Re: Single stage v. 2-stage trigger

Lance- Since you have a 2 stage in both of your AWs, I would suggest you do the same for the Surgeon.

Since you will be shooting all three, I'd think you would want the trigger to feel as close to the same in all three so you can develop proper muscle memory for the trigger pull.

Very good advice. Keep 'em consistent.

Your question basically boils down to a matter of preference. Read the opinions, pros, cons, try 'em both out then make your choice.
