I have an older S&W 686-4 with a 6" barrel, 357 mag 7-shot. The problem that I am having is about once out of ever 7-10 (not always at the same spot either) the hammer or trigger (depending I use single or double action) will lock up at about 1/4 way cocked. It will drop back forward but it will not go any farther back. Sometimes it will go through 2 or 3 entire rotations before having the issue.

I took the gun apart but didn't notice anything out of the ordinary and so I thought I would ask for advice on how I might address this issue. I don't mind working on it if I know what I am suppose to be looking for.

Otherwise, please recommend to me smiths who could fix my issue.

Re: Smith & Wesson 686-4 timing issues

Is the bolt lug retracting properly to unlock the cylinder and allow it rotate? I'd look there first.

When did it start doing this, and what was screwed with prior?

Re: Smith & Wesson 686-4 timing issues

It is hard to tell if the bolt lug isn't retracting properly or if the hook isn't grabbing the cylinder in the right location to rotate it properly. If it is the bolt lug, how do I address this?

I got it in a trade recently and pretty much right away it started it. I don't know how much the previous owner even shot it if ever. He got it from a lady whose husband died and she was selling off his wheel guns. Regardless, I don't think it has ever been tampered with since some of the screws holding it together appeared to still be sealed like it has never been taken apart before.

I tried contacting him after I realized this was having issues and I have received no reply from him so I have given up hope on his end to help me get this fixed. It does it with and without bullets in the cylinder.

To the OP:

1. Revolvers are like Swiss watches. Stay out of its guts until you know what you're doing.

2. You got it on trade. That should tell you something, were your eyes not full of stars.

3. 7-shot 686s are not <span style="font-style: italic">old.</span> I got my 586 in '85 or '86, and <span style="font-style: italic">that</span> isn't even <span style="font-style: italic">old.</span>

I guess I just meant older relevant to my 4" 686 I own that is only a few years old.

How much do you reckon it will cost me to have S&W fix it?
