Sniper Pistol

[m1a convert]

I just read the book "Fry the Brain" and he spoke of using a pistol to shoot long range. Is there a source of info on using a pistol to shoot extreme range?

I already have a Contender in .30-.30 (Probably need a caliber change) so it would be fun to mess with.

How extreme are the ranges we are talking about? Pistol extreme like 30+ meters or extreme extreme lol? Reason I ask is because a buddy and me were occasionally hitting silhouettes @ 100m with his Deagle in .50AE haha...sandbag supported of course

There is a big shoot here in Idaho called the Boomer Shoot and there is a guy who shoots pistols there out to 800 yards.
I guess they had a lady try it last year and she broke her nose from being to close.
And is it just me or is that purple guns scope slanted towards the right?

How about handgun matches to 1000 yards! With a properly chambered, braked and scoped(read rifle scope) MOA or XP, shooting these distances are NO problem. There are shooters at this match who have no problem shooting sub minute groups.

With the proper weighted and braked pistol, eye relief is not a problem unless you are shooting a boomer - at that point just back your Haid away and you are good to go.

Just add a can to one of these and you will have a tacticool pistol.

Might be a dumb question, BUT what is the difference between the rear grip xp100 and the rear grip? I was playing with both and like the mid grip more, but is there a difference on how they shoot?

Rear grips are repeaters,mid-grips are single shots. Purple one is 260Rem,Maroon is 22-250,Blue is .223 and Green one is 35Rem. They are pistol scopes, eye relief is perfect at an arms length,some use rifle scopes but only on something that doesn't recoil.This one was at 244yds out of a tree with my 260, but guys shoot ALOT farther than that with them.

I know "Fry the Brain" mentioned several options and showed one or two in it. A good option would be a Thompson Contender. They are easy to swap caliber, and the things are accurate.

Nice thread going on here. I don't know about the term "Sniper Pistol" although I guess anything used to kill someone from a long distance could be referred to that. I just view them as a challenging way to hit something small a lot farther away than most think they will. They will shoot... very well way out there. I've got a lil video of a practice day at Rayners Range with a pretty much stock XP (15" 260 Lilja barrel with stock trigger and a Burris <span style="font-weight: bold">PISTOL</span> scope) we compete with out to 1000 yards hitting pretty small targets with the tactical rifle guys. Some fellas use rifle length barrels with cut off rifle stocks to shoot these distances but that does kinda take the challenge out of it.

This is the one I use for the 1000 yard plate matches, shows some hits at 630, 710 and 900 yards.

Plans are this summer to use this same gun and venture out to Thunder Valley and work on hitting that mile target he has. I've changed over to a rifle scope for that and have more than enough elevation adjustment so just fine tuning and a bit of luck at that distance should work.

The bolt actions are by far the most accurate I've tried although the MOA guns are supposed to work as well but I haven't shot one yet. The TC Encore pistol does fine out thru about 700 but then starts to open up a bit and the TC Contender is good for a bit past 500 on the small targets we shoot at the matches.

We compete at Rayners Range here in Ohio and have shot at Thunder Valley before with them. There are three of us, myself, Dale and my son that use them for the matches. They are far more accurate than most believe until they try one or see it done at a match. Not exactly "Sniper Pistol" material but we've also been playing with my Freedom Arms 44mag with a VGM mount and been real consistant on a fullsize IPSC target at 500 yards. Even the range owner hit 3 in a row on it last summer. The more we play with these handguns the more they amaze us as to their potential. I do disagree with one previous post though, you do NOT need a rifle scope to shoot to 1000 yards, me and son did it all last year with Burris 3-12 pistol scopes and had no problem at all. Easily able to quarter an 8" target at 1000 yards but...... a rifle scope does have much better optics, better adjustments and usually a lot more power but is not a necessity to compete with.

Another reason for them, not yet mentioned, is that they are legal to hunt with in some places where rifles are not. That is the case in my area. You can rest assured that my bolt action 300 WSM handgun can allow me to hunt some stands and be able to take MUCH longer shots on deer than a shotgun with slugs.

The XP's, MOA's and T/C's are shot all over the country in IHMSA and NRA Long Range Pistol silhouette matches out to 500m.
As stated above there are several 1000yd matches out there if you look.
We don't have any in my area so we shoot NRA Hunter Pistol Silhouette out to 100m 2 weekends a month. Most shoot Contenders, but there are S&W revolvers and 1911's in the pistol cartridge matches regurlarly. On smallbore weekends you will see Ruger MK II and III's S&W 41's and K22/17's and few 1911's with 22 conversions on them.
The longrange matches are shot from a supported position. All of the NRA Hunter Pistol matches shot out to 100m are offhand only.
I normally shoot Contenders, but at least once or twice a year I dig out the 1911's and revolvers just for fun. As a matter of fact, my first 10 for 10 came with a revolver at 100m.

It has been done for a long time. Elmer kieth has used his 1911 govt model to shoot 600 yards plus. Also a documented elk kill I believe at 600 with his 44 mag wheel gun.

Edit: that was long ago. Kieth is long since gone. Brian Pierce also writes extensively about it.

I know they can do some amazing things. I had a 10" 30-06 IMI Lone eagle and it was a brute to shoot. 20 hot rounds one day made my hands sore for two days. My 500 S&W was a puss compared to the 06 IMI. It was a shooter though, me and a marine buddy shot a tight group (3/4" max)at one hundred yards and it impressed us and we were just playin. Had four scope rings holding the pistol scope at bay and it needed it. It had one of the best extractors I have ever seen, you twist the twist breach on the back and ding! There goes the spent shell.

It'd be badass to have one for a back country deer gun... sure be a LOT lighter than a rifle and as long as you got the energy I don't see why one couldn't put a deer down at 500 yds.

Absolutely Mike. I've killed several antelope to 400+ and a number of the guys are going out quite a bit further.

I use the 4.5-14x on this Sav. Striker 243 WSSM with Varmint Hunter's reticle and this is my current antelope rig. 400-500 is not a problem with these rigs and a good reticle or turret system--

if you google karl lippard military weapons,their website shows a pistol called the combat nco 1911a2 capable of accuracy at 400 yds. i read in another forum that this company along with the springfield armory and colt have each submitted a railed 1911 pistol for the usmc'c meusoc m45 pistol contract.

Ernie, how do you like the 6.5 WSM? That cartridge looks like it would be so sweet. I love the WSM's and I bet the 6.5 would be a jewell.. Have you seen any drawbacks with it?

Thats pretty funny! I shot my deer this year at 666 yds as well!
And my hunting partner who works for Seekins actually just put together one of these things in a .250 ackley and he's anxious to get it dialed in. I may be building one for my next hunting rig!

However I do have to say... that 7 WSM has got to buck like a mule! I don't even like shooting a 11 lb 7 WSM prone (granted its loaded HOT)...

6.5 Leopard (6.5WSM) 71.0 grains H-1000, 130 Berger, Fed Match primer, MV = 3095 fps.
NF NXS 8-32 with the NP-DD reticle. I use Norma 270 WSM brass.
I have not found a negative with it yet. I shot one muley and two antelope with it this past season, and absolutely loved the way the 130 Berger performed-DRT!

So far Holland's new Radial brake is my favorite.
I can shoot my 7mm SAUM and my old 7 Dakota with an extremely light hold.

You killed that yearling mule deer in SW Colorado at just under 600 yards with seemingly no problems.

That was before I had the Radial Quick Discharge on it.
You used it more when it had the original Quick Discharge brake on it.

Yep me and Al been hunting together the past two years! A helluva good friend and a nice guy! Heading down to lewiston tonight to pick up some reloading gear I left down there and see where we're going shooting on saturday.

Only downfall me and Al talked about last night actually would be an offhand shot at say 100 yards if you didn't have time to go prone or get a good rest. Especially attempting to get a good quick eye relief on your scope. What do you think?

With my lighter center-fire XP's I used to practice standing off-hand and would be minute of vitals at 75 yards consistently on deer. Only killed one deer standing off-hand, and it was 40 yards.
With a brake you can shoot off-hand safely with a lot of cartridges, but you need to practice ahead of time to make sure you know how to do it and not get bit.
Whether on the phone or short visit we had in 2010 I have always enjoyed vising with Al.

Not a field rig (rear-grip XP-100), but my son when he was 15 years old had this 5 shot group during a shoot-off at 1000 yards at LR pistol match:
Erik is pointing to his "flyer" which made his group "swell" to 8.375", without it the 4-shot group was under 3".

Hey Ernie, went down to the shop today and BS'd with Al for a bit and picked up my gear I left down there. He says to tell ya that 250 ackley XP of his is printing sub .5 MOA groups and he's got it all up and rocking and he's very stoked! Hopefully he'll get it out this fall and smoke a deer with it!
