Ok it is ON. The first day is in the books. There is a total of 63 shooters at the match. We shot at 1000 yards, shot movers, did three pistol events, shot on a target that registered hits on a computer and we did a helicopter event. Here are a few photos. Stay tune for more updates.

A 1000 yard cold bore shot is a heck of way to start the day.

OK, I was running the electronic target system and here are a few pics...

The scenario -- hostage target. Hit the bad guy in the head -- good. Miss or hit the hostage -- bad.

Hard to see, but here's the shot display. Three shots at 350+ yards.

The hostage got hit a few times!

This was a pretty hard stage because the shooters had no feedback (the target facing is rubber) so you had to trust your dope and send all three shots.

As mentioned before, there are a bunch of really good shooters here!

Neat system - it would be great to have one on about an 8 foot frame at 1000 yards.

This is along the lines of the Accoustic Target thread that I'd started a couple years ago. Looking forward to learning more about this.

Here is a closer pic of the laptop screen, it recorded a hit and a miss for this shooter, but as was mentioned, for this stage any head shot on the hostage taker was counted as a hit. This is a nice system.

Nick, I said you should have come down.... It killed me that I could only come down for a 1 day visit, but worth the trip to see friends, meet new ones, and check out some of the event...

Lindy it was nice meeting you. For those of us who enjoy Lindy's posts, he doesn't look up all that info before posting it, its all in his head, the man is an external ballistic super computer...

Indeed there are some great shooters here.

One of the stages in the match involves the following 25 shots:

5 shots at 500 yards on an 8 inch target.

5 Shots at 400 yards on a 5 inch target.

5 shots at 300 yards on a 3 inch target.

5 shots at 200 yards on a 2 inch target.

5 shots at 100 yards on a 1 inch target.

One of the shooters in the match today cleaned that stage - 25 shots, in a 23 mph wind gusting to 33 mph. Twenty-five hits, no misses.

That was perhaps the most impressive performance I've ever seen at a shooting match.

Yeah they had some very interesting shooting positions, but they worked well. A ton of great shooters!!!

This morning it was very overcast. I think the shooters all did a UKD from the tower to start the day. Then, as groups finished, they moved to the short range where they shot "know your limit" and prone support side (IIRC), then moved over to the barricades for barrel rest shots, sitting and kneeling (both from the support side) and then standing shots

Some then got to shoot using our electronic target system. The target was a regular IPSC sized torso, about 150 yards, shot from standing position. Just when we started, it started raining. We got about 7 or 8 shooters into it and it was pouring and blowing so hard that we could barely see the target.

We started getting some errors. Our electronics are waterproof but I did not make the fully waterproof since it is a portable frame and I thought the weather this week would not include rain (Murphy's Law!). I thought some water got into the sensors. Turns out that someone shot one of the sensors at the bottom of the frame.

Frank and I were sure that the frame would be big enough that the bottom wouldn't have to be put behind the berm, but the conditions were so terrible that it's understandable. Heck, the side frame and the concrete blocks anchoring down the frame on the ground were shot, too!

Everybody headed back to the bunk house and then it began thundering, too. The temp must have dropped at least 10 - 15 degrees as the wind shifted to come in from the north.

Anyway, lunch was then served as people started to dry out.

I started dismantling the target system and headed out shortly after this and the shooters were then heading back out to shoot.

Next time, I'm coming down to shoot and someone else can run the computer system!

That was Bill Fowler, who was 5th in the overall match.

And he was the only shooter out of 63 who cleaned that stage.

Some reference was made to some...unusual sitting or kneeling positions.

Those who might be coming to a match in the future might want to take this into consideration:

The point of a sitting or kneeling position is to compensate for the fact that a prone position doesn't provide the shooter sufficient height above the ground to clear obstances in the way of the line of fire.

What does that mean?

It means that you might plan on the fact that in future matches at Rifles Only, sitting and kneeling positions will likely have to clear a barrier of at least 16 inches - which means those dicked-up positions won't work.

A prudent shooter will practice a position which does. You have been warned.

I was one that made a comment about one of the unusual sitting positions.

I wanted to inquire was this position something that was a scenario where you had to hunch over to shoot your rifle off the ground or was it that the people in the pics just don't know how to use a sling in the proper sitting or kneeling position? Not trying to be rude but want to know what to practice for. That positon, as displayed in the pic above, just looked extremely unstable.

the positions in question are just a means to game the system, as sitting is described as having your ass on the ground and kneeling your ass is not... as Lindy wrote in the future we will adjust the course to force the shooter to shoot over something as the positions was designed to do.

As far as being unstable, that is just an uneducated guess, they are stable which is why they use them, as the lower to the ground you get the more stable your position. These guys generally clean the positional shots taken at 400 yards. The low positions help.

But next time, they won't be able to get away with these positions and NO shooting sticks are not allowed. We do supported shooting positions, this is not one of them.

I had to go to work this morning for a couple of hours and I am just getting around to posting about the match. First off I would like to say THANK YOU to Jacob, Frank, the two Lisa's, Lindy, Miles, Wynn, and John for all there hard work in putting on this match. Second to the sponsors. The prize table was UNBELIEVABLE. There was a lot of high dollar items on the table. Desert Tactical, Barrett, POF and many other sponsors were present for the match. Barrett and POF paid for the fuel and time on the Helo stages.

Congras to the winner. There were a lot of GREAT shooters at this match. As always it came down to the last day on who would come out the winner.

Going to these matches are always a pleasure not only to shoot, but also to hang out with some old friends and also to make some new ones. It was a pleasure to shoot with the guys to the right and left of me. It was also GREAT to see Team Blaster, Captain (dont ban me) Kick Ass, Moon, Terry Cross, T Burk, Stan the Man, Chad TRG42, Todd AC, Moon, and everyone else.
