Trudeau's party wanted the tariffs. They're getting crushed in the polls and if an election were held last week (before the tariffs), they probably wouldn't have gotten enough seat to even be considered an official party. They think that by getting the tariffs, they can portray themselves as defenders of Canadian freedom, or something to that effect. They also want the population to suffer so that they can offer covid style handouts to try and buy votes. That's the game they're playing. They know full well Canada will get crushed by the US, but like the Dems here, they'll do anything necessary to try and cling to power.

Stuff is typically 1.5-2x the price up there, they have a 13-22% sales tax (depending on the province) and people lose about 47% of their paychecks from taxes and mandatory deductions. So, a similar sized population up there is probably only buying half as much as that size population does here.
