Perhaps they could design something that when it drops free on the last round it is attached to a bungee type device that returns them to your dump pouch automatically.

Truth be told the gun industry is one the Dept of Commerce should promote.
Generally honest, offers skilled manufacturing jobs, decent wages, strategic necessity, provides work for related businesses - ordinance steel, plastics, tool manufacturers.
Crazy we dont support it more merely for its strategic importance.
Inter war they lied about the suitability of earlier produced firearms producing a reason to keep workers at the armories working and they sold firearms to civilians.
The result of this was an armory system that had trained workers to produce guns for WWII and a citizenry that was familiar with service rifles.
I ran multiple mags through a friend's PSA, then stripped and cleaned the thing. No complaints about it. I may not be an AR expert, but I know I can trust a PSA. Ya I know... "Go be poor somewhere else"...
The ultimate idea of the AR in McNamaras world was its ability to be built by dispersed industries.
He realized our Armory system left these juicy fat vulnerable targets at the mercy of our enemies.
The AK was designed to be manufactured by people that as @sirhrmechanic puts it use their big toes as a vice.
McNamara desired exactly what is becoming the 80 percent industry.
When people ask what AR to get I say "What you desire to spend".
You are hard pressed to build a fucked up AR today. You have to intend to do it and there are those out there that do sadly.
From businesses that have the slightest care though - they are probably getting receiver blanks from the same forge/molder as some of the more expensive builders.
End result just about any responsible builder is going to provide an AR that will outlast all but the most demanding shooters.

They actually do, LOTS of it!!!
It is just all concentrated on exportation of said gun industry product vs domestic sale and promotion.
They have entire Departments with the sole job of finding and vetting an International purchaser of the products, partner for Joint Venture of products, International partner for Manufacturing license agreement, etc etc.
Just look at how many International entities DoC brings into scheduled meetings with manufacturers at Shot Show....they pretty much have an entire floor of meeting rooms.

Yes Feds are just like CT and MA.
Both states love their in state gun manufacturing industries but they work to prohibit their own citizens from obtaining the product.
The biggest gun grabbers, take Hillary for instance (yes dear Lord please "take" her), will provide class III to "the freedom loving" anti Assad fighters in order for them to defend themselves yet claim your average American is an active shooter on the verge of mass murder not worthy of self defending.
The hypocrisy sucks.

Colt has no right to exist as a company. Their only "right" is to make a product of their own choosing. It is up to the public to deem it a worthy purchase, creating value in the company.
Compared to other company's building AR's atm, Colt leaves much on the table....not just crumbs falling on the floor. It is a billion dollar industry....well that colt has a small market share in.

That promotional release from Sig leaves out the little detail that two of their competitors ALSO got the same contract. This is for the next phase of the competition (2 years), at which time they will select the final winner.
Edit: Actually, they slip it in their very quietly. "...have been awarded a contract by the U S Army in the down-select process...". Meaning, the down-select process is still ongoing. In other words, they're in the final three, and have a contract for a certain number of systems (along with the other two competitors) to complete the next/final phase of the down-select process.
Of course, it doesn't change your main point in posting it, as none of the parties involved are Colt.

The idea that the ak47 was designed to be built by crude means is a misnomer stemming from the past availability of inexpensive import rifles. In actuality, aka pattern rifles were inexpensive because they were produced by communist countries where the state owned the means of production. We think of stamped sheet metal receives as cheap, but they are actually incredibly expensive to get going. The stamps are crazy expensive on a manufacturing level scale. Why can’t American manufacturing products e a $400 ak, when you can get a $400 ar? Because they aren’t easy or cheap to make.
And one thing about the AK often forgotten, it was not handed down from heaven via St. Kalshnikov, perfect and pristine, but went through years of growing pains until it was perfected. It was not thrown into a major conflict though during this time of improvement and refinement.

The AK was intended to be stamped but the inability of the soviets to develop the welding and steels needed meant the first series AKs were milled.
Milled at a crazy loss rate in amount of metal at the start to amount of metal at the finish.
The idea was solid though.
Look at the flats now. Thats a pretty simple receiver housing.
The trunnion, barrels and fire control no matter what will always require some form of tooling.
Soviets will deny it but they saw what the Germans did with quickly diminishing resources and despite that continued to increase production.

Takes all the fun away from parts swapping on your AR though.
Colt hasn't sold an AR since Walmart put them on half price to get them off the shelves.

In fact, according to Spitale, Colt’s manufacturing capacity for AR-style rifles is currently tied up in producing guns for outstanding contracts. Given this demand and given the lack of demand from the retail side of the market, Colt’s determination to suspend retail production is good business sense. M16s and AR-15s are different rifles, and to tie up production capacity in producing commercial semi-auto-only guns that nobody’s buying at the expense of outstanding military contracts is just bad business.

Im familiar with one dept that has S&W and just decided to create a future catastrophe by issuing their special guys Sig pistons in .300 blackout.
The S&Ws do everything the Colt could do, less money and local.
Most other LEO get .mil handouts for the goose egg.

I doubt the vast majority of LEOs issued ARs rarely, if ever, actually use them much, so buying from the lowest possible bidder or seller makes sense for LEO departments.
Colt ARs are work horses. They are not pretty, they won't satisfy the boutique AR buyers out there, but they get the job done and have for a long time. That's part of the problem, Colt got complacent. They did not innovate. Senior management did not heed the many warnings people were sounding.
Plus COLT is still the owner of the propietary AR TDP, so, technically speaking, COLT or FN are the only two making genuine "mil spec" AR rifles.
And so it goes.

I have no desire to buy a S&W AR.
I do really want a 6920, just havent wanted it enough to strike $900 from my wallet.
Having an M4 config, semi auto, S&W with Aimpoint PRO provided for my use I can attest it is plenty accurate for its intended purposes and has fired plenty of rounds through qual, a class at Sig Academy and occasional range trips. Its got to have 3-4K rounds in 9 months of possession. Would be more but the range trips are rotated amongst a number of other rifles - today a sweet M40.
S&W M&P 15 will do everything a Colt will do. Now the Smith AR10........avoid it and its proprietary barrel like the plauge. Seems the rifle is considered disposable should you shoot out a barrel.
Still I agree the Colt name means something, it does to me anyway.
If/When I buy that 6920 it will almost immediatly start going Mk12 Mod 0 clone route.
Back in the 1990's I bought a Colt Match Target AR, presumably for my Wife to shoot; but that didn't go very far. Later I traded it for a Savage 10FP 308 and a nice High Standard 12ga.
I wasn't well versed in AR's at the time (and only somewhat moreso now...), and I concluded it wasn't especially accurate (compared to my "Loaded" M1a), and the price point was somewhat excessive for my tastes (I am an unabashed cheapskate...).
So at this point, I'm not riled over Colt's business practices.
These days, I own and very much enjoy shooting Stag and AR Stoner AR15's, and will shortly be trying out my PSA PA-10 .308 20".
Colt isn't even on the far horizon for me.
I'm still somewhat of a cheapskate, and I'm actually enjoying myself in the process. Hey, folks want to spend more money; they actually can, and more power to them.

I always tell people that gun manufacturers are in for the business, Just a few of them are being run by hard people who don't care, some crappy season given but we all know in the name of business, all cards are on table.
