What came of the conversation? WE were both wondering how a small, really straight precision shooting website was swayed away from it's original Type A, Precision Shooting, Advice, and small selection of forums to participate in.
We have both watched as it has grown in size, added many forums that really don't relate to the original idea we both found.
We have looked and wondered at the emasculation this place has endured over the past few years as well. Complaints of being offended, individuals who have stalked other forum members, the outright pussification overall.
Mind you these were things we were inoccuously chatting about as two guys who have been here for a long time, but not as long as a few others. Harmless chat. He was too much of a pussy to post this so after a day of thinking about it(I have been here so many times and clicked back to the 'Forums' link instead of SUBMIT)I just had to post it. It was like a double dog dare or something. It had to get out. I could no longer let it be(yeah, I should have, oh well)
Maybe it's good that I did it. I have to wonder what will come of it now, but this time, I will hit the Submit button.

Now it's out, the proverbial cat has been let loose. Oh, almost forgot about the women...some have thick skins, others, well they run off crying, but many here just bury their noses so deep in that ass it's sickening. You would think they were not married or had long term girlfriends or something

I'm gonna venture a response of...

People kept posting useless BS in the wrong forum and annoying everyone so they made all the subforums so people could navigate thru the inevitable BS more quickly.

The fact that the Bear Pit is one of the least visited subforums is good to see imo. More than 3 or 4 threads and I just start shaking my head. 5 or 6 and the headaches kick in. Would seem to be impossible to deal with people posting their opinions and not have an avalanche of BS to wade thru regardless of your intentions.

I'd much rather spend my time in the other technical sections, learning, contributing useful info, etc. I doubt I would miss the headaches of the current Bear Pit but it's fun to run across the few entertaining and informative threads on subjects I wouldn't normally read about on a gun forum.

You throw a little estrogen in a community of mostly males and the results are predictable.

Anyway there are many varying levels of why things happen.

1. Most people like the "idea" of a sniper rifle or tactical shooting but they don't understand the why and what behind it. In the past if I brought out more of the USMC Sniper traditions people would understand the symbolisms, today they are offended by it.

2. It's much more competition & precision shooting now which goes back to #1, the why behind it. They are much more sensitive to having their feelings hurt, in a way that being in the military conditions you against.

3. Growth happens, and with that people from from varying walks of life who don't understand what the score is will start to express themselves more frequently and are just as vocal about what they don't like. So the majority that was, is slowly replaced by the lighter touches of the new members with no background in the military.

4. Easily offended, you wouldn't believe the complaints I get on a weekly basis for the Girlfriend thread. As well for avatars and signatures that show women. Some people have a religious bent I don't understand yet they want to shoot stuff. They will post about killing bambi with a 338 and quote me scripture because of naked women... seriously this happens. They want their kids to see the pictures of sniper rifles and hunting photos but no naked tits. That offends them.

5. Back to sensitivity, today people will be banned, and know exactly why, mostly political stuff because they think we all like Glen Beck here, and then will go absolutely crazy about a 3 day ban to the point of being permanently banned. They cannot accept this, banning to some is not understood. They threaten, they attack, and they make multiple logins simply because they don't feel "they" deserved to be banned. In the old days you took a punishment and moved on, when it was over you came back and nobody cared one way or the others.

6. For sales section -- enough said.

Lastly, they feel they have the right to say whatever they want, they feel this is part of their first amendment rights to be here speaking, yet they want everyone to conform to their brand of thinking. It's blatant hypocrisy. They don't understand the military overtones and the fact because this place started with military traditions there is no democratic thinking. There is a chain of command, and where they fall in that hierarchy is how they act. Instead Mister 3 posts believe he has every right to say what he wants as much as Mister 3000 posts. There is no earned slots anymore it is now demanded respect. They don't get there is such a thing as a stupid question (Or here, a stupid answer) and people will call you on it. So when they do get called to the quarter deck it becomes a slight to their manhood. Fuck when I was in boot camp, because of my size when anyone else got in trouble so did I, i was expected to push in order to build up... I didn't complain because I did nothing wrong, I just did it.

There is more for sure, the fact more and more companies are on here, I now generate an income from this place so I am conscious to make sure the companies that pay are being serviced. People talk about great customer service on here everyday, yet don't understand it's my job to provide that to the companies who pay the site. So when they get outta hand attacking them, and I step in they feel slighted I won't let them say whatever they want. Doesn't matter they never used the product, they heard from a friend who had a friend that broke one once. In the past it wasn't wan issue, so I let people unleash with both barrels, today that is a potential customer, although I still turn people down or make it impractical to be there for them, we are seeing more and more everyday. That matters.

I thought about a lengthier reply but I couldn't have said it better. One thing about SN is that there are sections within the forums such that if you want to read, post or discuss "Armory & Supply" you know what to expect.

I wish that endless discussion about "hamsters and their sex acts" might end. But it doesn't take long to recognize the subject matter of a thread and move on. If the subject matter doesn't interest you. I appreciate Switch's posts on bar-b-que and Bourbon.But could care less about cigars.Thankfully there is a title to each thread.

That is a lot of it right there. For me anyway. I am glad to have served in the military and to have a little training in precision rifle shooting. If for no other reason than to be able to have and ask a decent question.

True this site has recently become more commercialized and, with that, much more popular. So what? Kudos to Frank, his hard work and his business acumen.

I don't see that it has become a venue where one is only permitted to say nice things about the commercial interests and equipment featured here. The site still has a reputation for delivering honest criticism on many subjects from people who know and are able to articulate their experience and their points of view. This is one of the things this site has to offer which many other sites can't match.

With growth comes the challenge to keep the 'goodwill' - its reputation for honesty and integrity that the site has built over a number of years. I see the growth. I see the change. But I see it as progress that requires increased sophistication from the membership. Maybe that's why I have been challenged to back-up what I post but never censored for any criticism I have given.

What you guys don't get is, he was banned from here for years... many in fact and every six month he would email with an update and I told him when he turned 21 he could come back on. He was always polite and respectful and understood the score.

You get guys that get banned for a weekend who flip the fuck out, will make multiple logins, will get banned 4 more times in the same week and never get it. These guys can be in there 50's and still do it. So who's maturity level are we questioning here.... because you only see one side of this stuff, meanwhile, every day I get an email telling me to fuck off because an "adult" was banned for a blatant violation.

Also, as a FYI, this site for years never accepted a dime from anyone. The business model was here and never taken advantage off. In fact only for the last 2 years did we even get a media kit for people. So the idea this place was started to get swag is completely unfounded. I get it, people don't like we get access to a lot of stuff, or we make giving to the matches part of the requirement. But that helps all of you much more than it helps me. I don't go digging through the prizes pulling out the best shit to keep. It goes to the competitors and the unpaid help to run the matches. If you don't compete you don't understand but at the same time, that is our way to give back to this community. Offhand comments like, we were started to solicit swag, well that is just bullshit, more than 6 year this site was nothing more than an expense.

The thought of someone like that on the operational end of a precision rig, much less a Raven Arms pistol, absolutely fills me with dread. Places like this are a few keystrokes away for everybody, so there's little to be done, I would imagine, about the shin-humpers, other than to ban and wait.

A site like this has to walk a thin line to be successful. On one hand, you have a large range of people who come to this site for information. Whether they are young, old, rural, urban, black, white, academic, current military, former military, wannabe military... there are dozens of people from those walks of life who come to the Hide for something. Some come to learn, others to be part of a community, others to troll. Managing all those personalities and agendas is a formidable task.

What we have in the Hide is a central location that you can learn just about anything, provided you've got the patience and humility to ask good questions and use common sense. Frankly, this site has taught me how to be a better shot (the online training), how to reload effectively and accurately (the reloading section), and helped me to meet people to shoot with that share similar interests. I don't look at the Hot GF thread much because, quite frankly, if I want to see that, other sites do a better job showing it! But what the Hide offers is unique, and that's why I don't really mind the agitation and propaganda threads, the end of the world threads, or the classic "which gun should I buy" thread. For me, I'm just glad I've got a place to find information at my skill level, read reviews about different equipment, and generally bullshit about cigars, shit downrange, and how to bang more steel than the other dudes at the range. If I've got to tolerate a couple whiny turds to do that, so be it. I've got a few people on ignore already, and I'm sure there will be more. While there may be some pussification going on, the Alpha Males still rise to the top.

I was with Frank near the beginning and watched the growth. Some good some bad. Had our fallings out and found common ground to work on once again. Thats furthering the shooting sports and sniper knowledge. No more no less. Set aside egos and disagreements for betterment of all. I have nothing to do with running this site anymore but still have a desire that it continues to do well. We need to get more and more shooters so we can continue to shoot. Too many want to take our weapons.

One thing I have noticed in last year is the moderators not allowing stupid destructive shit on here. Thats a big plus to me. Politics have no place on here and seriously will keep others that work for Gov away. If the Gov types stay away we lose knowledge base so please go to other sites for political discussions. A small price to gain sniper knowledge.

This place has grown and morphed and frankly right now seems like more Comp Shooters than snipers on here. Probably because most snipers are busy fighting a war on several fronts. That too will change with time as the wars eventually pull down. It will continue to ebb and flow and change.

Now this notion that this place was founded on getting free stuff is pure BS. Frank did not take a dime for several years from anyone.

There's a few here that are hard to read, so my guess is, their paid to be here, or are targeting/gathering for down the road.

I'd hate to be Frank and have to walk that fine line this site has grown into, but nothing stays the same forever. I even recall way back, when Switch was pounded on by many still here and Frank had to shut the gate on the wolfs.

I would say those numbers are about right. When I first found this site about 4 years ago it was a lot different. Things change and I understand that. I just take the info that I can use, contribute what I can and stay out of the bashing sessions because I would just rather let it be. I think it is still a great site compared to others but it has changed a lot over the years.

Impressing upon people the down side of political discussion is one of the hardest things we do, and probably the most moderated aspect of the site.

They just do get it, that we have this rule for the exact reason stated above. We really try to stop this but we are constantly flooded with anti-government stuff every day, it's the political spin du jour and they mistakenly feel this is a safe harbor for this stuff. They feel its a fertile grounds for recruiting like minds because of the firearms, so we fight this a lot.

All we can do is ask that when it happens you send in a moderator alert and you don't participate but many people don't understand the concept of not feeding the trolls.

When we say no politics, people feel we are being irresponsible, but honestly there are a lot of working shooter that can't be around it, none of it in fact which is why we try to maintain a zero tolerance policy.

Ebbs and Flows are completely understood,

I'm under no illusion the strength of the forum lies in its members and the experience they bring to the table.

I don't mind certain questions being asked over and over, especially since I prune the topics with no archival back up, so like Lindy does, having a file of standard answers to cut and paste is fine by me. Immediately jumping on a new poster because of a repeated questions sort of drags me down. Especially for some common questions -- can I do without the Counter Sniper threads, absolutely but when a company spends more on marketing then on the product you have to expect it. I would rather a pasted answer that defuses it rather than the dog pile that follows. It's counter - productive in many ways and doesn't do much to educate the masses.

If I had my wish I would assign people with a solid respectable answers to be designated repliers. Smart I like, Smart ass I can do without most of the time. It's why the Bear Pit is now much further down the line. I'm guilty of it for sure, some days you have to let off steam... but when 20 people dog pile, it gets ugly fast. Its not lost on me either that when I do cut loose on something people take it as a green light, so I try to be select in that.

I appreciate the site serves a purpose and it is clearly grown beyond anything I have expected, which is tribute to a lot of the original members more than just me. For every post post I have made, there are 10 better ones from the likes of Greg, Lindy, Kevin, David, et al, who were here from day one.

My personal thanks to Frank and all of you "old schoolers" for enduring the growth pains and keeping the ship straight.

Being an LE instructor for years, but never Military I very much appreciate what I have learned from being associated with this site. And with getting older have really learned something about a passion that I once thought I knew something about.

All the other BS is incidental but the wisdom and perspective that you guys have shared has been both valuable and enjoyable.

For that I thank you and for your service, I Thank You again!!

A LOT of those guys have new names and some are long gone, but one fact is I can shoot better than some of them which did more to stop that than anything anyone ever said. I like to think I did a well enough job of standing up for myself that the Principal could stay in his office

This place has taught me so much more than if I had just went and bought a rifle and started DIYing like my original plan. I remember the days of the Gay Biker, Cooks Can't Shoot and other things, but laughed at each and every one of them, sucked it up, and drove on. Never saw enought threat or anything to even mention it in a PM to Frank or anyone else back then either. No pussy here.

I have seen this place grow, seen it be part of a few fights over what or who's scope/stock/yaddah whatever was best or industry standard whatever.

The one thing that has always stood out to me was the class and level of what one could learn here. It was so much easier to find those many years ago. Straighforward, no BS(of which I am gulty of throwing my fair share like the rest of you). Not once has LL or anyone related to the Administration of this site asked for anything to support it. The competitions brought in interest. That interest brought in manufacturer's and company's. These people decided prizes needed to be on a table. The ante was upped time and time again. I am certain as the sun falls behind my hill every night that Frank has stood and looked at those tables with sheer amazement a time or two and wondered how it all came to be from such a start here.

I think what I really should have commented on was how this place has changed. SO many great things, and some not so great. It sure is different though, freakin huge.

While I have been here I have serrved two deployemnts(one short, one long), watched my Mother pass, made many friends, lost many faces, and have met some of the best shooters the Hide had to offer. I have found interest in different rifles, a few pistols, and shotguns. Had the huge knowledge base here not been avaialble in it's one stop form, I probably would still be looking at the rifles I wanted instead of owning them.

A good friend who used to have a discussion forum once told me that most internet sites will have about a three year lifespan of true popularity. Around the third year, it becomes so overpopulated with people who have no relation to the original subject matter, the original cast will simply vanish and find other places to hang out.

I thought he was kidding until it happened to his site.

Regardless of what you think this site is or should be, it is Frank's site. Period. What he says goes. The First Amendment only limits the government's ability to suppress your expression of even the stupidest of ideas. Frank is not so restricted.

There is still plenty to be learned here and many from whom it may be learned. Ignore the crap that irritates you and life is much simpler.

I like that this site has military underpinnings. I think it is an important aspect of it. I am only a competition shooter now, but the" braizenness" of the millitary mind set does not bother me. In fact, I enjoy it.

If anyone else dislikes this place due to that, they are welcome to leave just as they were welcome to enter.

Maybe that needs to be a disclaimer when people sign up.

Anyway there are many varying levels of why things happen.

1. Most people like the "idea" of a sniper rifle or tactical shooting but they don't understand the why and what behind it. In the past if I brought out more of the USMC Sniper traditions people would understand the symbolisms, today they are offended by it.

Some people have a religious bent I don't understand yet they want to shoot stuff. They will post about killing bambi with a 338 and quote me scripture because of naked women... seriously this happens. They want their kids to see the pictures of sniper rifles and hunting photos but no naked tits. That offends them.

5. Back to sensitivity, today people will be banned, and know exactly why, mostly political stuff because they think we all like Glen Beck here, and then will go absolutely crazy about a 3 day ban to the point of being permanently banned. They cannot accept this, banning to some is not understood. They threaten, they attack, and they make multiple logins simply because they don't feel "they" deserved to be banned. In the old days you took a punishment and moved on, when it was over you came back and nobody cared one way or the others.

6. For sales section -- enough said.

Lastly, they feel they have the right to say whatever they want, they feel this is part of their first amendment rights to be here speaking, yet they want everyone to conform to their brand of thinking. It's blatant hypocrisy. They don't understand the military overtones and the fact because this place started with military traditions there is no democratic thinking. There is a chain of command, and where they fall in that hierarchy is how they act. Instead Mister 3 posts believe he has every right to say what he wants as much as Mister 3000 posts. There is no earned slots anymore it is now demanded respect. They don't get there is such a thing as a stupid question (Or here, a stupid answer) and people will call you on it. So when they do get called to the quarter deck it becomes a slight to their manhood. Fuck when I was in boot camp, because of my size when anyone else got in trouble so did I, i was expected to push in order to build up... I didn't complain because I did nothing wrong, I just did it.

There is more for sure, the fact more and more companies are on here, I now generate an income from this place so I am conscious to make sure the companies that pay are being serviced. People talk about great customer service on here everyday, yet don't understand it's my job to provide that to the companies who pay the site. So when they get outta hand attacking them, and I step in they feel slighted I won't let them say whatever they want. Doesn't matter they never used the product, they heard from a friend who had a friend that broke one once. In the past it wasn't wan issue, so I let people unleash with both barrels, today that is a potential customer, although I still turn people down or make it impractical to be there for them, we are seeing more and more everyday. That matters.

I'm still new to the site compare to most here. As much as I agree to most of things being said on this subject, and yes, they do bug me from time to time, I choose not to read those comments or threads or simply just smile and let them pass, thinking: well, I have just wasted a few sec. of my life to open those threads.

My post count is low, and mainly just because that I don't want to post anything I have no experience or knowledge with, and very selective on which threads I would chime in. I believe if I have nothing better to say, I should shut up and read more. I love to read posts from a few: LongWolfUSMC, switchblade, Greg Langelius *, sobrbiker883, Sterling Shooter, etc..(of course Ll and Jacob), And my all time favorite: Lindy and Boltripper!!

This is a forum of great community, so many great folks and great information all centered around a great sport. I take it for what it is, and nothing less. I guess what I am trying to say is, internet is full of junks, SH is so far the best I have been already, I just wish more and more members here can pay more respect to others here, and do the right things.

Thank you LL for providing a net space for such good community. I can see your frustration, and pay high respect to your patient (I know I can't do it). Most of the Mods here are polite and fair, closely guarding this place.

A few good men is all it needs to keep this forum going. Cheer up and carry on.

I've only been here for a short time compared to many of you, so I can't really comment on how the forum has evolved over time, but I will say that I have learned quite a bit about rifles and precision shooting, and that without this forum and it's members I'd know significantly less than I do now (approximately jack shit).

So I'd like to use this bandwidth to thank you guys, especially Frank, for creating and maintaining a forum where real men are willing to share their valuable knowledge and experience with other men like myself. Knowledge really is power, and you gentlemen are contributing to the betterment of not only the precision shooting community, but America as well by sharing that power with noobs such as myself.

Stay up and keep up the good work.

I don't know what it was like in the "good ole days" but I can say a few things about this site:

1: I've not come across anything dealing with firearms that I couldn't find the answer to here.

2: When I need a laugh, I can come here.

3: When I'm pissed off and need to vent, I can come here.

4: There are plenty of kick ass people on here that I hope to meet some day, now that there is a respectable range in my area.

I could name more, but I won't. I was searching for some information when I found this site, looking for a place to learn, and Sniper's Hide has not let me down.

Since this site isn't "exclusive" you are bound to attract some unsavory players, but fortunately they fall by the wayside pretty quick.

I like the way the site is run. Period. Its like a more in depth version of the Outdoor Sports Recreation section on the forum I most frequent. I personally only know one person here(Brain) and he's the nicest guy you'll ever meet. I think we have a great community. Its nice we can flame someone without fear of being banned(if the flamming was warranted)

I love the tech here. A lot I understand and some I don't cuz I'm not at that level yet. I'm not .mil or LEO, I'm a hunter who happens to have a gun problem.

a few weeks ago my new boss told me that I was holding the SCAR wrong when I shouldered it like a "Fud". I told him I was a hunter not SWAT, but I'll still outshoot him at the range despite my lack of tacticool

I find myself reading more in the Beyond 1k / Reloading / Fieldcraft / Marksmenship forums than ever before as it holds my interest more than GD. The FS forums here are unlike anywhere else.

I do miss the military mentality that has been overwhelmed by quick witted gun snobs and thin skinned cry babies that don't understand honor or self sacrifice. The site when I first joined was nothing but type A personalities who knew their shit, and most had real world experience doing it. It has honestly taken my skill set to a higher level faster than it would have without the site.

Oh well, I can still obtain any info I need or could ever want here. A lot of the guys in my platoon are members here also, and use it for improving their skills even though none of them post. A large portion of members are in this category.

I have met a lot of great guys here and consider a great deal of people here mentors, even though I have never personally met them. The ones I have met have all been amazing individuals.

Good... bad... or ugly, the site is ever changing, but still holds mostly true to the original focus.

Im sure I will be banned at some point in the future for an abrasive post or using too much strong military language, but that is par for the course these days.

Those who fail to adapt to new situations inevitably run the risk of becoming obsolete.

Adapt and overcome, its still worth it to me.

Am I the only one who sees the irony of this topic? Here we have report of a conversation, between two men whom one could only describe as "hard core", about the general "pussification" of the hide; yet one man is said to have refused to make a post about it (you could say he "pussied out"), and the other admits he had reservation about making this thread (as well as having "pussied out" when creating similar threads in the past).

I am unsure if that is a testament to both mens love of the Hide, or their fear of banishment at the hands of LowLight. Whichever the case, the best way to lead is by example. I salute you both

. May others follow your example and continue the depussification of the Hide.

And thanks again Frank for keeping this place around for those of us who seek the knowledge it contains. Your road is not an easy one, but we appreciate that you walk it.

SH went from a sideline cost to Frank to a business. I have seen SH grow, then change.

But the bottom line is this. If you do not like what is typed, do not read it.

If you have info to share, share it if you wish. But the butt hurting is not a SH member issue. Its the sensitivity training you all have excepted at some level in your life.

I am guilty of it too, to a point. BUT when men and women can not call a color black, due to pissing off white and red you are screwed.

So do not adjust the parallax so much you can not see the wind call. Keep your eye on the reticle, not the target and send it. If its true you will hit the mark. If not, learn from it and grow up.

John
