So we put a 3L turbo diesel into a Jeep TJ. Diesel guys step on inside.

Had a 97 Jeep TJ and we decided to make a little project out of it after I blew the original engine up.. Not quite done as I wanted to finally get new/larger wheels on it and swap out the MetalCloak fenders on it to the wider 8 inch version as the short ones allowed mud/rocks to fly off the front wheel and basically shotgun the rear fenders and the MetalCloak Rocker rail as it seems the wife now needs a 'step' to get into it.

    Here's where I'm at:

3L turbo diesel out of a Touareg (pushing 24lbs of boost at the moment)
    AX15 transmission
    Intercooler
Teraflex lift, short arm, Bilstein shocks
ARB Engine compressor with front/rear air lockers
    MetalCloak front/rear frame mounted bumpers
    MetalCloak fenders
    MetalCloak stinger
    Lightbar + fairlead 'connected' lights
    Fog lights
IR lights with Blackout switch that kills all visible electronics; Odometer delete
    Complete repaint in 686 tan

    Work in Progress:

There's a part my build guy is getting from Scotland of all places that was designed for this engine that somehow can help 'tune' it and make it more efficient while also getting 3-4lbs of extra boost
    17 or 18 inch wheels
    MetalCloak fenders (wider)
    MetalCloak rocker
Rear facing jump seat and harness
Pintle mount on side, rear roll bar for 249/240 cradle

Now here is where you diesel guys come in. This thing already sounds and shakes exactly like a HMMWV. It has a ridiculous amount of turbo spool/hissing/sucking going on as I shift between gears. Its hilarious. The local Jeep guy populace is already confused and somewhat frightened. In 1st, I can almost lift the damn front wheels off the ground, and it sounds like it should be coming out of something 3 times this size.

When driving it home, I was driving through my neighborhood and the 'bored housewives club' was out walking their dogs and fuck trophies. They basically scattered like a bunch of scared animals off of the road when I came around the corner.

How do I make this thing even more obnoxiously loud while increasing performance?

    Wtf no pics?

Making the exhaust shorter will make it louder, but check local regulations, they may have requirements for it to exit behind the passenger compartment. I don't know much about the Toureg diesels, 24lbs doesn't sound like much boost when my cummins runs over 40 with a stock turbo, different motor I know, but more boost pressure only makes noise when you're using it, and driving around your neighborhood on boost is likely to get you far more attention than just Karen and her crotch fruit sneering at the knock of the diesel engine at idle.

So a vertical exhaust pipe coming out of the hood? Oh man. That sounds either awesome or WTF lol

I googled 'hood protruded exhaust' but get nothing.
You searched the wrong thing, you need to search “how to make my diesel as queer as possible” then you’ll find exhaust coming out of the hood and stacks on pickups.

lol that was my first though.

My second thought was....Ill have an exhaust up front for even more WTF.
The exhaust on my cummins dumps right at the back of the cab (state requirement) via a turndown. At 65mph it's barely noticeable when cruising around without much load. At 70, it drones, at 80, it drones loudly, at 65, pulling the camper up a steep grade, it sounds like godzilla roaring fuck you and your sister, it's awesome.....for a little bit. 23.6mpg on the highway though, for a 8700lbs 21' long barely aerodynamic brick.

    Branden

On chilly mornings, when I warm it up first thing and turn on the exhaust brake and it runs up to high idle, it sounds like the engine from a CH-47 is idling under the truck....like ear splitting loud when you're outside the truck...it's fucking glorious.

If you really want the most annoying fuck you sound available, put a glass pack on it.
Yea, the cheap $25 junk one from Oreilly's or Pep Boys.
Nothing, and I mean nothing, sounds as bad as a diesel with a glass pack.

Yea it's a very diesel bro thing... Next step is affliction shirts and bedazzled jeans with white framed sunglasses with cowboy boots even though you don't ride........

That reminds me of a story.

So when I was contracting and at Bagram, there was this civi engineer contractor who was this scrawny guy. Always talked about how he was just doing this to pay off his house and blah blah and as soon as he did he was done with this shit. Turns out, it was like his 6th time over because his fat assed wife would literally spend all of the money while he was gone each time and only got fatter. After his 2nd time she quit her job. 3rd or 4th time he came home to new cars, wave runners and shit he had never heard about, etc.

So he gets like 10 days off between a MOD in a contract. Decides to do what a lot of them do and go to Dubai and doesn't even bother telling his wife because, well, who wants to see her fat ass anyways?

Motherfucker comes back from Dubai wearing a 2 piece denim outfit from Versace that has a no shit rhinestone dragon that goes from the denim top to all the way down one of the legs. He thought it was the most awesome thing ever. I'm sure that shit was like 5k. I'll never fucking forget that lol

Google hood stack, there’s a peice that mounts on the hood the actual exhaust pipe only protrudes into it a couple inches. Also tall hood stacks are gay, a short one looks alright. You could also do a fender exit with no protruding pipe.

It comes from pulling and racing, it’s more free flowing having inches of exhaust instead of feet.

On the bright side it probably won’t have that gay jet turbine sound that drowns out the diesel noises from the turbo whistling droning down a long exhaust.

I have a weird feeling it has one already.

Ill ask him if there's one in there. What does it do?
Most oem turbos use a bypass valve to vent discharge pressure back around to the inlet side of the turbo when the throttle is closed. This keeps pressures in check(because the turbo is still making pressure due to its inertia). It also protects the turbo from damage due to compressor surge. Additionally the excess pressure, if not bypassed, would cause the turbo slow unnecessarily, which would delay spooling when you open the throttle again(lag).

A blowoff valve simply vents that pressure to the atmosphere, which is noisy. Its just an adjustable poppet valve. It can also be a safety in case of an over boost situation if your boost control fails.

    Noooooooooooooo

I want real diesel freedom sounds. Not some ricer shit.
all the TDI stuff I’ve seen sounds like a ricer, a 4bt Cummins tuned up is what you seek.

Check out Thailand for some badass small diesel tuning, they get retarded power out of small motors for the long tail race boats. Don’t know if any run VW shit, but still cool.

At first I thought you were doing something cool.
But, Touareg? I guess you are the German after all.
All Gi's who died in a willy's are wondering if it was worth it right now.

    Seriously, where are the pictures?

I do give him points for not doing the same old swap everyone else does. Though it’ll never be as cool as the LSX Willy’s that used to be streetraced.

    Yeah Im already there/past that.

    Sounds very similiar.

When I Turbo’d my M998, I cut off the mufflers and ran a straight pipe to a fording exhaust. Note it is on the wrong side! Cut it off and changed the tip angle and made some other mods.

Between the .50, the Saw and the straight stack… it is obnoxious for sure. Which is the idea. Makes the Xanax and scary-mommy set all pissy for sure.

Also goes like a raped ape. I keep the boost under 10, though. Those 6.2 non turbo motors don’t like high boost and will grenade if pushed too hard. But it is nice to be able to pull out in traffic and not cause a line!

    I need another 249/240 cradle.

Can run it out of the Jeep and also having the ROPS mount on the MRZR fabricated.

There’s some good prices on cradles on the G503 site. Hard to find cheap. But they are out there. I fabbed the arm mount from scratch. Wasn’t going to pay 2 grand for one from some surplus dealer.

Neighbor used to have one of the old naturally aspirated 7.3's with glass packs. Obnoxiously loud.

Nothing more obnoxious than JEEP OWNERS so you’re on the right track if that’s your goal.

I never got into the heavy diesel tuning when I had a Duramax but the dream was always 60% over injectors and twin or compound turbos. I would have needed bigger fuel pump too but it sounds like your mechanic may know what’s needed if you want to do go fast parts on top of a tune.

It sounded perfect with a straight pipe from the turbo back. Play with exhaust pipe diameter because that will change the tone from more throaty to more turbo or somewhere in between.

Otherwise if you want it obnoxious just throw some horns on it

What year is the donor engine? How many miles are on it? I hope you replaced the Timing chains/tensioner before you installed into the current chassi.

Are you seriously after more power$$? Or are you just trying to be loud and obnoxious with what you have.

You could tow your 10 k gen and power one hell of a PA system, that would be loud! You’d have a microphone...

I should have said hood exiting exhaust. Popular on all things. It can sit almost flush

You can also be “last year” and do a fender exit exhaust.

A blow off valve is sometimes used on manual transmission cars from the factory, but they recirculate instead of atmospheric discharge. Different ones make different sound. They take the pressurized air from the charge pipe and vent it to atmosphere, between shifts.

Shit… Rolling into Bagram decked out like Kenny Powers might be the most badass thing I’ve ever heard.

Would have been even better if he was towing that jet ski.

    Respect.
