APS – Tactical / Precision Rimfire Match – AAR – 11/07/09

On November 7, 2009 we held our monthly 22LR Tac/Prec Match at A Place to Shoot. We started around 12:30 and finished around 4:30p.m. Shooters were allowed an open range before hand to zero. The weather was cool with highs in the 70s, and wind was present as is usual for an afternoon at APTS.

Trophies were awarded to the top three competitors as follows: First Place – Dennis Dannehl; Second Place Felix Kupis; Third Place – Eric Najduch.

The following is a breakdown of the courses of fire:

*The competitors did not zero their weapons as part of the match. However, prior to the match targets had been set up for them at yardages 50, 75, and 100 yards for all to check zeroes.

** All stages have a 1-minute par time unless indicated.

Stage I – 50 YARD 5 DOT DRILL

In this stage the shooters engaged five ½ in dots from the strong side prone from 50 yards with a 60 second par time. Each hit was worth 20 points

Stage II – 75 YARD 5 DOT DRILL

In this stage the shooters engaged five ¾ in dots from the strong side prone from 75 yards with a 60 second par time. Each hit was worth 20 points

Stage III – 100 YARD 5 DOT DRILL

In this stage the shooters engaged five 1 in dots from the strong side prone from 100 yards with a 60 second par time. Each hit was worth 20 points
age.

Stage IV - KNOW YOUR LIMITS – 100 YARDS

This stage was a “know your limits” with a total of four dots decreasing in size – 2”, 1.5”, 1”, ½”. The rules were that you could stop anywhere in the process you wanted but if you missed you zeroed your score for the entire target. We had one person clean this stage and several try for and hit four out of the five dots.
.
Stage V – 150 YARD 5 DOT DRILL

In this stage the shooters engaged one 4 in dot from the strong side prone with five round from 150 yards with a 60 second par time. Each hit was worth 20 points.

STAGE VI – 100 YARD STEEL

In this course of fire the competitors engaged a 4.5” steel plate at 100 yards from an improvised position laying over a sandbag pile and shooting through a small opening in an upright frame. The shooters took a total of four shots and were scored 25 pts per hit.

Stage VII – 155 YARD STEEL

In this course of fire the competitors engaged a swinging steel bottle silhouette at 155 yards from a n improvised position across a couple of pallets. The shooters took a total of four shots and were scored 25 pts per hit.

Stage VIII – 70 YARD STEEL

In this course of fire the competitors engaged swinging steel chicken silhouette at 65 yards from a standing supported with four rounds. Each hit counted 25 points. The interesting part of this stage was the fact that the target would swing wildly if hit anywhere except dead center – made for some interesting 2nd, 3rd, and 4th shots. I encouraged many shooters to shoot the bird while it was swinging . . . “Go ahead, I dare you!”

Stage IX – DEFENDING THE HOUSE

In this course of fire the competitors engaged a swinging 1.5”X2”target at 50 yards from an improvised position from the rear window of the range house. The shooters took a total of four shots and were scored 25 pts per hit.

Stage X – SNIPER ON THE CAN

In this tenth and final stage the competitors were called upon to defend one of the most important structures at APTS – a “gump” (for you less informed a porta john) From a seated position in the “gump” the shooters engaged five 2” clays, each worth 20 points. They were allowed the use of cross sticks if desired to steady their hold in this compromising position. I am pleased to announce that they saved the gump from the marauding clays..

All in all it was a very good match and all did very well.
