I am pondering a new hunting rifle for various things. I want something reasonably mid to light recoil wise with a good flat trajectory. Must have some good commercial loads. Something to take game from ground hogs to deer.

A light and handy rifle, short but still capable of good to decent accuracy. Most of my experience is with the 700 platform.

Think something really easy to throw over your shoulder and take on a five mike walk. Something I can teach the nephews to use as they get older, and still take ground hogs out to four hundred.

Thoughts on keeping it light, integral base / rings, decent but light scope etc?

Budget probably five hundred or so minus glass.

Re: Solid hunting combination

Once upon a time I practically stole a Ruger KMVTM77 in 25-06 for 450$ it's been a great gun over these many years, shooting both 75 Vmax's and 100 SMK's under .5moa on my best day's.
All good suggestions here, though out of all these, I would say Rem700 .243 or .260 in a SA or a LA 25-06.

Interesting. I know little of the 25-06, what makes this or the. 243 a good round? Which would be flatter shooting out to 400?

It fits your requirements first of all, low recoil, very accurate, wide selection of bullets ranging from very light varmint bullets to some good deer size bullets. Both are commercially available, probably more so with the .243, but the 25-06 has more punch if loaded in such a fashion. And both are widely available in all our favorite rifle models.
