Finally got a nice day,0-5 mph wind, 50y. My gun (93R17TR w/ cheap SFP mildot 6x24x50, soon to be replaced with an Athlon Argos BTR) shoots the CCI TNTs the best followed up by the 20gr FMJ and Gamepoint/XTPs. The Vmax ammo is inconsistent for me, will shoot a few great groups and some NASTY ones. I didn't foul the barrel with the different rounds before switching but I don't know how much it makes a difference with this caliber. First time shooting in a little over a month, so not too bad considering. Rifle has a small area at the rear of the receiver bedded and where the barrel meets the reciever as well. I may go back and do the whole reciever cause I would like to lose the ever frustrating 1 flier. I know it's largely lot dependant but the TNT stuff is nice and consistent for me.

I also have a Sav 17hmr. Mine seems to shoot better groups with the CCI 17 & 20g HP's or the Fed 17g HP's. The best game related terminal performance was with the CCI with the 17g ballistic tips. Are those the TNT's? I cannot recall. Winchester ammo was the worst. Yet, I am told that all hmr ammo is being made a CCI? Really? Maybe all I am seeing is the lot variance. 1/2" at 100y is the best I can do with it. 1.3"-1.5" at 200y.

CCI produces all the brands of 17 hmr except Winchester.
This can be verified by looking at the manufacturers production stamp
located on the bottom of the plastic 50 round boxes.
The production/date code on CCI, Federal, Remington and Hornady
are all stamped with the CCI date /lot code.

17hmr ammo quality varies greatly as it comes off the CCI/Winchester assembly lines.
I've found canted and loose bullets, irregularly seated bullets, major variations in primer/powder loads,
differing brass dimensions and muzzle velocity spreads as much as 450 fps from the same box.
There is no lot quality testing done or quality grading as is done for 22lr.
Make it, box it, ship it, sell it. It's hunting ammo, not precision target fodder.

Definitely, I agree. I've seen miss shaped vmax tips, soft points that were unable even. Which is why I think the tnt 17 gr HP and 20gr fmj do a Lil better regardless of brand. At least with those the tips of the bullets are relatively uniform and even compared to the vmax stuff. I had just mount the scope and this session was to get zero conformation. Alot of it is me as well, the group on the bottom right was the first out of the gun a over a month and these are all the rounds I shot that day, so no real warm up or more rounds to foul the barrel as I cleaned it for storage awhile back this is my first time behind a bolt gun in awhile, so gotta keep working those fundamentals. I usually shoot this gun for groups at 100 but 50 is all I had acess that day. Still gonna bed the entire receiver soon. I switched out the scope last night to my primary arms 4x14x44 rgrid that usually lives on my .22. I'll shoot it again soon with this scope, get the barrel a Lil more fouled and see if I can't tighten things up a Lil more.

The TNT is the 17 gr HP. Loaded in CCI, fed. I think they are easier to keep uniform possibly by how they're made. Like I've said I've shot some screaming groups with vmax rounds but also some horrible ones, I've seen VMAX'S that aren't even conically . No real horrible groups with the TNT rounds.
