someone explain to me the F Class say 308/223??

In tactical comp. in the F class to "my understandings" before I look stupid here you can use a 223 or a 308 only in one category right???

Wouldnt everyone use the 308 at the longer ranges or is people shooting 223 to win one competition and 308 to win the other or is it combined?? I just dont understand this. thanks and sorry to sound stupid if this make me.

Re: someone explain to me the F Class say 308/223??

Hi,

I'm not exactly sure that I understand the question, but have I got this right.

You are asking about F-class target shooting?

Now, as I understand it there are 2 divisions in F-class, open and F/TR. In OPEN, any calibre is allowed, so lots of guys are using 6.5-284 and stuff like that. My friend has just gone to a 7mm SAUM with high BC bullets.

Now, F/TR is only open to .223 OR .308, and at the extended ranges that F-class is shot at, that pretty much rules out the .223, so pretty much everyone shooting in F/TR is using .308.

If you are asking about TACTICAL comps, you'll have to ask someone else who actually shoots that (we have no such comps in the UK)

TACTICAL and F-class - two different animals.

Did I understand the question correctly, and did I answer it to your satisfacton?

Re: someone explain to me the F Class say 308/223??

While many use a tactical rifle in F Class FT/R category, there is no actual 'tactical' category in F Class.

The .308 is highly versatile at all common F Class distances, the .223 can be somewhat less versatile at the really long distances.

.308 and .223 can be shot in either category, with a rest and bag in the Open category, but FT/R is, as mentioned above, limited to bipods and these two calibers. The FT/R category is borrowed pretty closely from the T/R category in Palma shooting.

It's a matter of capabilities and challenges.

Re: someone explain to me the F Class say 308/223??

Im referring to the one (competition) that can only be shot with a 308 or 223 rifle caliber only. Hy do they make it with those to calibers knowing everyone is gonna stick with the 308 for long distances. Why not make it a 308 and another similar more comparable caliber to shoot against. i feel its a waste. Just my opinion i personally love the 223 though so not knocking it for sure.

Re: someone explain to me the F Class say 308/223??

The F-TR is shot with .223 or .308 Win.

The .223 is great out at 600 yards for me. I don't need to use the .308win nor dose anyone else, If they don't want to.

For me it's a waist the extra money on ammo.. Read the wind and its less recoil. However; the .308 is what I use after that and in no way am I saying that I don't use my 08 for less than 600 what I am saying is its normally not the best choice for me.

Note when shooting F-Class you are out punching paper and don't need the down range performance to get the job done.

If you are asking the thinking behind restricting TR to the .223 or the .308 Win..

Well that's like asking why is the sky blue.. or how many licks dose it take to get to the center of a tootsie roll pop.

The world may never know..

Note: the F-TR is both .223 and .308 together scored the same no handicap if you choose a .223 over a .308..
In the Open class its a arms race and they are all scored together also. if you don't have 5 shooters shooting TR than the .223's and .308's are grouped with the OPEN class than you would go up ageist lots of 6.5-284 win's in bench rest configurations.. being a TR shooter now for the most part. I enjoy out scoring some of the shooters in open with my as one open shooter put it "fancy Varnment Rifle"

Re: someone explain to me the F Class say 308/223??

F T/R firearm and caliber definitions are taken from the NRA/Palma Class shooting discipline, which has been traditionally restricted to NATO ball ammo chamberings, 5.56x45 and 7.62x51, represented commercially as .223 and .308. You can use these chamberings in both F T/R and Open classes, but for F T/R, they are the only ones allowed.

Personally, I think it odd that they adopted the chambering restrictions without also adopting the bullet weight limitations, e.i. 155gr Max for .308, etc.

I've always thought the whole F T/R definition was arbitrarily slanted in favor of the Palma shooters and their preferred gear.

But then again, who am I to comment?

Re: someone explain to me the F Class say 308/223??

The point of F/TR is to provide an avenue for someone to pick up basic factory gear and go compete. It was intended to be introductory. Naturally it has gotten so that an introductory system is not competative in TR.
TR and open compete seperately, but during the same match and then they all get divided according to rating.
I see plenty of guys w/ 223s out performing 308s at 600 and 300. Yeah it's tough at 1k, that's just what they did.

Re: someone explain to me the F Class say 308/223??

for f/tr is there a weight limit on stick?

i understand there is a no brake rule any other limitations for stick?

what is target at 300 and 600?

how is shoot/cof organized eg. time and # of rounds, sighters, etc?

Re: someone explain to me the F Class say 308/223??

1) F-T/R weight is in the avenue of 18.8LBS? and F-Open is in the 22LB ballpark.

2) no brakes or cans

3)dont know about 300 and 600, but at 1k it's a 48(maybe 60") square.

4)depends on the match/range, some places run a palma style f-class where you start at 800, go to 900, then to 1k, and then shoot ANOTHER 1k match after the first three are completed.

Re: someone explain to me the F Class say 308/223??

F/TR class in a nutshell is a .308 or .223 rifle with some type of attached bipod

There is a 'Open class' for other calibers and a heavier weight limit, you may use any caliber in open class.(up to .32/8mm)

Rifle weight in F/TR < = 8.25 Kilo or 18.15 lbs with all equipoment attached

The target x ring is always 1/2 minute of angle at whatever range,, the 10 ring is 1 minute, 9 is 2 minutes etc, so at 300 the 10 ring is very close to 3 inches at 600 6 inches etc

above is the link to find all your questions at.
go to the high power and then look at the course of fire. that will show you where a .223 works great. there are differant course of fire like 300 500 and 600 where the 223 works great.
I open a range on Ft. Bragg, (100 to 1000 yards)and Larry takes his rem 700 in 223 and shoots the 1000 all the time for fun. he keeps it in the black and does pretty good with it.

Re: someone explain to me the F Class say 308/223??

Ya I find it easyer to have the rules handy and go from them. We had a guy come to a high power match and put up a umbrella, when i told him he could not , he said it was a rule i made up. I pulled the book out showed him and then made him move out. Our next long range shoot we are doing the 300 500 and 600 match. lets every one play, then in the after noon we will shoot the long stuff.
