So I am looking through a Speer reloading manual and here are the claimed BC's on some of their bullets:

.308 180 BTSP .540 significantly better than a sierra 175 or 178amax

6mm 105SP .443 pretty good for a bullet that will work in 10 twist

I know they are not match bullets, but is anyone shooting these? Are the BC's for real? How is accuracy?

Re: Speer bullets anyone?

I have 3 different Speer bullets I use on a regular basis. They're pretty good. But in MY OPINION, (and that's not worth much) they are not quiet long range match quality. One of my 1/2 MOA rifles shoots them consistantly in 2.5 to 3 moa out to 400 yards.

The sectional density is so high because of the lead tip. Hollow points don't have the heavier lead running all the way out. Most hollow points have lead up to the bottom 3/4 of the jacket.

I loaded the speer 180-btsp in my brothers 300wsm savage 12. they were fantastic! he was able to shoot sub MOA to 1K, as a matter of fact, that was the very first load that took him that far. I dont recall the elevation required to get to said distance, but I do recall it was much less than I expected it to be. Quite similar to my 300wsm shooting 190smk's at 2950fps.

I haven't shot them for match accuracy but if you want to know how they perform on game then I can say they will hammer them. I have shot them out of .30-06 and 300 WM and they work real good. If you are wanting a match bullet then look at what they(Sierra, Nosler,Hornady etc..) offer. They are called match bullets for a reason. Not trying to be a smartass either but Speer is a good bullet. Good Luck with your search.

Re: Speer bullets anyone?

No matches. I am always looking for more BC. If the BC numbers are for real and its an accurate bullet, I dont really care what brand it is (I am a savage guy you know)and the fact that its hunting bullet is a bonus for me. Accurate is accurate and with shortage of many "match" bullets I am hoping they might be worth trying. Thanks for the reply's so far keep em coming.

Re: Speer bullets anyone?

I bought DPMS's LR308 AP4 in the spring. Its purpose is to be a good hunting rifle for deer and pigs, be interesting to 600 yards, and be a good all around farm gun.

In order to keep it simple, I wanted one load for all of these purposes.

I chose the Speer 165 grain boattail spitzer for several reasons. Its BC is around .47 (I think this is right, although Midway had it published as higher, confirm this if it's important to you), which is pretty good. I thought that the lead tip would hold up better in the brutish and heathen-like semi platform. It's also a good hunting bullet. I took my first deer (for this rifle) with it this afternoon. While the deer ran about 35 yards, I found a little piece of lung where he was shot. There was such a great blood trail that the drunk guy on the Andy Griffith show could have followed it. No meat was wasted. Going through the ribs and lungs, I'd say that the expansion was perfect in that the animal died quickly and didn't explode.

I've only tested it out to 350 yards in small winds. At this range, it was way more accurate than I thought it would be.

These days I don't spend much time measuring groups. The bolt's for really accurate shooting, the LR's just bliss shooting. My glory last week was when I hit the small (5") steel target dead center at 350yds from sitting (NM style) while my dad shot his M70 bolt gun from the bench. That tied us for the day (he had a really good group from the 200yd line that I couldn't touch with my LR308), and I didn't try to do it again since I probably would have missed and put him in the lead :^)

Anyhow, I'm happy with the Speer 165 grain Spitzer Boattail bullet.

Enjoy,
Bob
