Ok, so I've used spotter cases, but is there some benefit to using them? I get the slight protection that most cases offer, but other than that, am I missing some other benefit by just not using one?

No, not the pelican, just the foam and fabric cover that it comes with, more like a carrying case than anything else. I'm just using a Vortex spotter, nothing fancy (its actually pretty cheap, gotta get a new one) It has a zipper for the objective lens, eye piece and the base plate for the quick release plate, really light foam padding, and some velcro to keep the covers away from the lenses when in use.
