Spotting Scopes Or Telescopes?

I was shooting last week with several people and with my kind of cheap spotting scope I couldn't see holes on white at 550 yards. I asked the guys to my left and right and they said they couldn't see there's either at 350 and 550 yards. They were using Vortex, Sig, Leopold and a Barska. At least 3 of these were good quality scopes. I was wondering if anyone ever used a telescope like for watching the sky for range work. At 150 or 200 X could you see hits on steel and holes at 1000 or more? Someone has to have had to try this and if anyone could let me know I would like to hear what you think. Thanks

Atmosphere will play with image at higher magnification.

Often times best images are found at magnifications less than 20X.

I think there is a limit to the effectiveness of any lens type optical scope.

Perhaps you need a camera system or to invest in a drone for down range viewing.

Thats what I use. The binoviewer is a new addition. It seemed to work fine at 66x with a single eyepiece.

I want to try slightly lower magnification with the binoviewer.

The resolution of a scope is determined by the airy disk which is inversely proportional to the aperture so go big if you can. Mine is 90mm but I have a 127mm for times when I don't need to be as portable.

Atmospheric seeing is another issue so you're not going to get maximum performance except during the morning in still air before the ground temperature rises.

As for magnification, even if you've got a great scope and perfect conditions, you probably won't have much use for more than 80-100x.
