Spotting scopes

Cronus is very good but you will be hard pressed to see the difference between the Cronus and the Ares spotters in the field. The big advantage the Cronus has is the duel focus which allows fine tuning without moving the scope while the Ares has a focus ring which requires enough pressure to turn to move the scope while tuning. The Cronus is slightly smaller if that matters.

Thank you for the responses. How far out has anyone tested them fo clarity to one mile on a one MOA target, and can you see splash and target impacts clearly?

I started with an Athlon Ares and had no issues. Only gripe was the angled viewer doesn’t rotate. I won a Razor spotter and switched... I prefer the clarity of the Athlon.

I thought the lock ring would allow it to rotate. Granted Iam pretty sure it is the entire scope and not the just the eyepiece. I appreciate the brand comparison. It helps me rule something else out.

Yes, our Ares spotter does have a lock ring to allow the scope to rotate on its base. If you toss it on a window mount, you'd still be able to use the angled lens from a vehicle by rotating the scope. I know we have used the Cronus to spot splash at 1 mile, and it did excellent. I haven't tried the Ares at 1 mile yet, however, it was superb at 1,100 yards.

I upgraded spotters last year. Found a great deal on SH for a barely used Ares 20-60x85. The Ares blew away the Bushnell Legend T in a side by side comparison....as in not even close. Glass is very nice.....mirage will always be the limiting factor with high magnification spotters.

Thank you for the info. Are you a dealer, or shooter?

Athlon Rep! I really, enjoy the shooting sports industry (hunting, competition, or just for fun). I'm always happy to help folks getting into new shooting disciplines. Whether it's discussing shooting equipment with new shooters or seasoned veterans, ballistics, or helping folks understand the principles in making their first long-range shots.

Recently used it out to 750 yds to spot splash on steel using a .223. It was sunny and mirage was present but the Ares still performed well. Conditions were not optimal for seeing trace. It's a solid choice at a reasonable price. I'm not willing to spend in the thousands for a Swarovski or other high end spotter.

For a while last weekend. Was clear across the field of view. Compared favorably to a Vortex Viper HD on the range. Didn’t have a Razor to compare to. For the money, I would by the Ares again over the Viper HD.
