Hey guys, obviously I am a newb here, but am no newb to the trigger. At any rate, I am looking for an all purpose .308 rifle and have settled eyes on the SOCOM II in hopes it will be a good hunter and sport shooter. I dont really need the rails, however, I plan to mount a Laser Genetics ND3x50 to night hunt with. If any of you have experience with this rifle, I'd love to hear all pro's and con's.

Thanks.

Re: Springfield SOCOM II .308

I've got the "scout" model and it's one of my favorites.
shoots about 1 1/2 moa with it's favorite load, easy to hit with out to 400yds.

Re: Springfield SOCOM II .308

I have the plain 16 version without the rails and I like it very much. It is heavy, but it is very handy and points well for me. There is very little recoil with the weight and brake. Overall it seems like a very solid rifle. I have done a few seasons brush hunting with it and have been very happy with it on deer. Haven't really gotten to do a whole lot shooting farther out with it, but I can pretty easily tag 1/2 size IPSC targets at 200 yards or so. I am sure it will do better farther out. Just really haven't stretched it out much.

Re: Springfield SOCOM II .308

You have it exactly right. It is a good hunter and sport shooter. A better hog gun was never made. It will not shoot 1/2 MOA at 100 yards, but it will stop a hog or a man pdq at that range. It will shoot farther obviously but at that point it becomes how good a shooter you are. The main point of this weapon? It is just plain fun to shoot.

If you don't need all the rails, I'd find a SOCOM. The II has the rails. Another option is to sell them. A buddy of mine sold a bunch of rifles he put in Sage EBR's. Since Springfield had Vltor agree not to sell the rails to anyone there is a market. IIRC, buddy listed the rails and factory syn stock on GB. With the first one he didn't know how much to charge. Opened at $100 and it sold for about $400. He's made between $335-445 for all the quad rails he's sold off these things.
