i recently bought a brazilian mauser. it is in an absolutly beautiful curly maple stock and has a douglas barrel in 7x57. i havent started reloading for it yet as i gave all my 7x57 stuff to my son when he bacame the 4th generation to have my last 7x57. the rifle came with a redfield 1 piece base with front turn in ring and rear windage adj ring. it had an old williams 4x twilight scope. i was going to put 2 piece weaver style mounts and a vortex 4-12 viper on it but discovered the rear bridge had been mis drilled and i have to stay with the one piece base. how loose is too loose on the front dovetail ring? i can turn it easily in by hand, not with a pipe but by hand. i used a set of burris signiture rings to mount the viper. i have tried rem ammo and priv partizan and the best i can get is 2 inches at 100 yrds. might it be the ring is too loose? or do i just need to find a load it likes, i expect better with the douglas barrel. i never used this style ring before. i would like to go to a one piece weaver syle base but dont want the scope any higher than it is. who makes a good but thin mount for the 98 mauser?
