Just bought this rifle and was wondering if any of you have any info on these rifles. I have never seen one before and thought it was interesting.

Here is the only info I have on it.

steyr model match....steyr-daimler-puch a.g.steyr mannlicher mod.match..... .308 win. This is unfired this has the excellent front sight of the originals and the famous walther rear sight.
Thanks.

Re: Steyr Match 308 Info??

I have the same rifle and at the moment I am working through some problems. Purchase mine used. Barrel and chamber are in good condition. The stock mount is a poor design. The trigger guard/magwell is a moulded one piece plastic. The action bolts pass through the trigger guard/magwell, then through the stock and thread into the action. The problem is the plastic bolt holes in plastic piece do not hold up. They crack and you then do not have a consistent mounting platform for the action, thus making it difficult to group consistantly. I am considering a new macmillan stock or attempt bedding the action myself after I find a replacement trigger guard/magwell. Hopefully the new one is no longer made from plastic.
My rifle was sold as an "SSG Match". I have not been able to confirm that the action/barrel is the same as their ssg69 model. There is not much info out there about these rifles. I would imagine that yours being nfired will shoot very well. keep you eye on the trigger guard/magwell as you put some round through it.
I am going to try to locate a replacement part for my rifle tomorrow. I will let you know if they have an improved updated part for this problem area.

Re: Steyr Match 308 Info??

The metal and the bottom plastic is the same as the SSG69. The bottom plastic is fragile. You can reinforce it some w epoxy but you still need to be careful. Steyr USA can supply replacements. FGMM shoots quite well in mine although I load for mine. Check the threads here on the SSG69. There is/was some quality looking bottom metal rumored recently but I have not been able to get a response from the purported users/makers of it.

Re: Steyr Match 308 Info??

Ordered one today. $70.50 for a piece of plastic. There are no upgrades from Steyr. I. would also be interested in that bottom metal as well. What are the torque specs on the two action bolts, and is your action bedded?

Re: Steyr Match 308 Info??

I had one of those many years ago. Very accurate rifle. All parts are identical to the SSG69 except a much more rigid action. The target rifle has a match chamber as opposed to the SSG69 who has a mud-friendly combat chamber. You can drop the targetrifle straight into a McMillan SSG stock.

They were testfired at the factory before shipping and each rifle had to shoot a 10 shot group inside 7.5cm@300m (3"@330yds) in the first try.. The testtarget on mine had a 4cm 10 shot group(@300m). I can see from the pictures that your rifle has a 200m test target.

I liked it. It was a very effective competition tool.

After this Steyr made a rifle called the UIT who had the SSG Target action, a proper 2-stage match trigger and, most important of all, doublestack 10-round steel mags.

Re: Steyr Match 308 Info??

Mine is not bedded although I would like to install pillars and as I said earlier, I would really like the bottom metal as advertised at styriaarms.com but I get no response to my inquiries. There is a member here "emouse" that was helping market the bottom metal but he has gone silent as of late as well.

I do know mine is a keeper as it shoots regularly in the 2's at 100 and inside 3" at 500. Love this one.

Re: Steyr Match 308 Info??

Thanks for all the replies guys. Emouse PM'd me earlier and this is what he had to say about the bottom metal that were going to be made.

By Emouse:

Hi,
The bottom metal was an idea that I commissioned a manufacturer in Aaustria to produce. I supplied the clients, managed all the correspondence and even offered to purchase design and production rights outright. The manufacturer has been evasive, declined my offer and has attempted to do his own thing with the client base I supplied. I guess I got screwed.

I bought this one off of gunbroker.com. They do not make this particular model any more, I believe only 2000 were made in the 80's. You can still purchase the Steyr SSG 69 in different variations, I have seen several for sell on Auction Websites. You could probably contact Steyr USA and get a lsit of dealers in your area or at least her in the states that can ship one to your local FFL.

Re: Steyr Match 308 Info??

Hey O,
How goes it? I finally got my money back from the Post Office! So sorry about that whole mess!

Anyway, I've owned 2 Steyr Match SSG's. The first looked a lot like yours except mine had a Brown Plastic stock. The second was the rare bird. It was a PIII Match and was factory fitted in an HS Precision stock. You probably won't ever see another. They are extremely accurate with Match ammo in 168gr. or M118 Lake City Match ammo. The throat on SSG's is extremely long so don't try to get close to the lands. There's no need. Just load to factory spec as far as C.O.A.L. The trigger guards and mags are fairly fragile and do break easily. The 10 round mag will run you $200+ if you can find one. They make scope rings specifically for it in 1", 26mm, and 30mm. I think you can also get a picatinney rail for it but I'm not sure because I never really researched it thoroughly.

Enjoy that Bad Boy! It should be impressively accurate.

John

Well, I would be interested in a high quality aluminum replacement trigger guard/mag well for the Steyr SSG 69 rifles as long as it uses the FACTORY MAGS.

Meanwhile, I will keep on hoarding spare plastic trigger guard/mag wells - just in case.

It looks like if the trigger guards are built it will be to use the original Steyr mags so it will be an easier transition/swap for most people. Stay tuned. Thanks for the interest.

John

I bought a Steyr-Mannlicher MATCH-UIT.
When you say the throat is extremelly long, how long do you mean?

My OAL just touching the lands is 75mm (2.96").
Is it within specs or eroded?

Thank you,
Tqb

There's nota much info on chamber/throat lenght on these rifles.
I'm praying on and answer...

I hear ya, not much detailed info around. I bought a match model in the early 90s that had been hacked up - no iron sights and someone threaded the barrel 1/2-28 (apparently with a die and drill). Cut that off, re-crowned in a lathe and it shot very well with a ZF84 that I scrounged up. Do remember it had an extra long throat, but I haven't had it out in ten years. Will investigate; good excuse to revisit an old rifle.
