I have a chance to purchase a like-new Steyr SSG 04 rifle. I have handled Steyr rifles before and they appear well-made to me. I also love the feel of their 2-stage trigger.

However, I have never shot one and I do not know anyone who owns one.

So ... is there anyone out there who has experience with an SSG 04 rifle? Any thoughts, comments or suggestions?

I will primarily just shoot it from a bench and will go out to about 600 yards. I do not participate in any competitions -- Maybe one day though.

This one is .308 with the 24" barrel and, like I said, it has barely been used.

Thanks

I shot one in 300WM with a hand load I slapped together. It shot .5 moa which was surprising because I didn’t do any load development. Kinda pricy for what you get. A Tikka is a far better deal.

I have no experience with the latest 04 iteration but I can tell you that the whole SSG family has a super solid reputation as solid and accurate rifles. The SSG69 style rifles were arguably some of the first commercial grade sniper rifles around and set the pace for everyone else to follow. I have heard that they are taking pains to continue taking the product line seriously.

I have a ssg04 in 308z I can shoot under 1/2 moa any day with federal match or Norma USA 168 gr. No load development needed. One minor issue. Most of the rails are 20 moa. I had to put a dedicated scope for my ssg04 because all other rifles I have are 0 moa rail and I use 20 moa unit mount.
Is it from a private seller? If so, can you try it before you buy? And no, Steyr ssg04 is not over price vs tikka t3 tac because you get the muzzle brake and bipod when you buy new.

Back in 2008 I shoot the ssg-04 in several occasions, mostly 300 meters with RWS and Lapua match ammunition, grouping wase very good, usually less than 6 cm for 20 rounds at 300 meters, the rifle is very comfortable with very good trigger and ergonomics, problem is the magazines are proprietary and if styer will stop producing them you will not have any alternative, I didn't shoot the tikka but maybe you should try it before you make a decision
Good luck
