I am thinking about giving the Howa a try. I can buy a barreled action for around 400 bucks. What do you guys think of these stock rifles. Are they any more accurate than a remington? On average anyway?? Lee

Re: Stock Howa barreled action??

They may or may not be more accurate than a Remington. The machining tolerances are tighter in the Howa than the Remington as a rule, which as a rule will lead to a more accurate rifle. But, they are mass produced goods, there will be variances in both.

I sell the Howa B/A with a Bell & Carlson varmint/tactical stock and reports are generally that .75 MOA is standard. I do like to refinish the Howa barreled action because I think the blue is too easy to scratch.

Re: Stock Howa barreled action??

Lee what happened to your Surgeon round action build? Or is that going on as well?

A future family member owns about 10 rifles and all are Howas in various calibers (mostly hunting). I've shot his .223 and .308 and both are sub MOA out of the box, even with their cheap Nikko scopes and Fontana, CA winds (45 - 60mph at times). Both are sitting in factory laminated stocks and no doubt they will shoot better after bedding or another stock.

I am contemplating a Howa build as well. The future family member has a friend who works for Legacy so he gets mad deals.

Re: Stock Howa barreled action??

Surgeon build is still on thats for sure. Problem is we are going Prairie dog-n pretty soon and i thought about getting on of the howas for the trip. I hate to put to many rounds down the good stuff. Plus i am not even sure what i am going to chamber the new action with anyway. I am thinking 6BR 22BR or 22-250AI Just cant make up my mind. The howa barreled actions seem like a good deal thats another reason i am thinking about buying one? Not sure what i am going to do. Lee

Re: Stock Howa barreled action??

Lee, I traded an AR upper for a Howa 308 in a McMillan A2. It shoots surplus ammo right at moa. I was using Portugese and Hirtenberg. IMHO, for a knock around rig, you can't beat them.

Re: Stock Howa barreled action??

I have a howa in .308, I was thinking of buying or piecing together a .223. I looked at the howa barreled actions, but the .223 only comes in a 1:12 twist. That was kind of a deal breaker for me, but it looks like you might be rebarreling it anyways. If so I say yes. I am very happy with my .308. It's no custom action but I don't think anyone can say remmy or others are inherently better OFF THE SHELF. It is good to go...

Good Luck

Re: Stock Howa barreled action??

The Howa Stainless HB 308's are hard to beat for the $ IMHO.
My older brothers is pillar bedded in a Manners Gat and it would be mine if he would sell it. I've seen a bunch of them and they have all shot very, very respectable. But this one is a hammer.
He shot two sub .75 (1 about .630)inch groups with it at 200 back to back with FGMM. It hammers when the barrel is hot or cold, whenever really. Get one, shoot out the barrel, then have it bluprinted and throw a Broughton, Brux, Krieger, whatever barrel on it and have a full custom build. Bolts are kinda hard, so I've sent one out to Randy (HateCA) to do one of his bolt knobs. He does fine work with a great turn around time.
