FWIW - I thought long about building a new rifle and setting myself up for success with a stock. Ultimately, I decided to "do up" a rifle I already own. I really love my Model 70 and I love it's Maple stock...so, I don't think I sell off the stock (but might consider having it professionally shortened if this pans out). The option to stick with Winchester pretty significantly limited my options WRT published inletting from several of the good options here.
I made a call to McMillan, didn't ask for the price until I'd provided my numbers, did my best not to weep when I heard it, gave thanks for the .mil discount and now the waiting begins. They indicated they ought to run the card in 3 weeks or so. Ultimately, I spec'd a Carbon/Edge Game Scout with a couple of left side mounted flush cups and decided to grab a 2" rail section up front just in case.
I think I'll bed the action...seems like a few ounces well spent. I suppose I should at least shoot it "raw" first. I'll be interested to see where the weight finishes. Original weight is just about 10 lbs on the nose, ready to hunt.
I appreciate the feedback and really, really want to take advantage of the info with a new rifle...just gotta get my wife shooting or my Dad into bolt guns...
