Im upgrading my remington 700 SA. I have done the math, a McMillan with bottom metal is roughly the same as an AI 1.5. I'm doing mostly target with this rifle however I will be hunting with it this year. So I'm looking for some imput.
Thanks
Josh

Re: Stock upgrade McMillan vs AI

I love the AI stocks, all of them feel great to me. However......

If you're going to be hunting with it, get the McMillan or Manners. For a tactical rifle that would double as a hunter, I think the Manners T2 with 90% carbon would be very hard to beat.

Get a 90% carbon fiber Manners of your choice with the mini chassis and you can have a little of both. A chassis and a hunting stock

I got a 90% carbon fill Manners T5 with the mini chassis and use it for hunting. It's heavier and larger than the T2 but still not bad. I think it is a good all around stock.

Re: Stock upgrade McMillan vs AI

I would go with a Manners T mini-chassis. I don't believe that getting 90% carbon fiber will save you much on weight, as you only get a 0.4 lb reduction; would that much really make a difference with all the other hunting gear you will carry?

The base stock weight would be 2.5 lbs, +0.62 lbs for the mini chassis, so 3 pounds total. If you have a sendero type barrel and a short action your rifle should come in under the 10 lb mark. A triad tactical stock pack (large version) will give you a nice cheek weld and put your eye on level with the scope without needing the weight of the adjustable stock hardware.

I think that this system gives a nice, all around system that you can use for target/tactical stuff and hunting.

The AI is not for me. If you're not interested in the Manners mini-chassis, then get a bedded Manners T4 or McMillan A5. These are very nice, comfortable stocks that are functional and have much more pleasing aesthetics.

Re: Stock upgrade McMillan vs AI

I would go McMillan A-5 and not look back. I've got a McMillan and a MannerS and personally I like the hard gel coat epoxy finish on a McM. Doesn't scratch all up like the Manners and can be had in ANY color combo.

+1

I got behind as many different stocks as I could before I decided

And for what it's worth, I went with the KMW sentinel. The most comfortable and forgiving stock I've ever handled

Manners has the 90% carbon fiber option to save weight as well.

I like Manners stocks over McMillan due to the slightly higher comb and overall feel. OP you should definitely give Manners a good look. You can also get it with the Mini Chassis system as mentioned and have it bolt in like the AICS but with a more standard stock feel. For target and hunting look at the T or T3.

Manners also has molded in camo patterns and solid colors now so nothing to scrap off like the painted versions.
