Does anyone know of a method, database or what have you that one can use to determine if a firearm was stolen.

I have the opportunity to make an excellent purchase, but I have some reservations.

I'd love to be able to run the serial number without incurring any unwanted notice.

Re: Stolen or Not ?!?!?!?!

only database I know of is NCIC ( FBI's LE database ), and not all stolen firearms are in it, some are never entered, others are dropped from the system after a while. local LE can, and usually will check the serial # in NCIC, but if it comes back stolen, they'll want to know where the gun is ( who you got the # from )

I's say that if you think the person is shady, don't do the trade...

if you're just worried that it's too good a deal, it may very well be, but I'd be more worried about something actually being wrong with the gun

It doesn't work that way.

Re: Stolen or Not ?!?!?!?!

i would get the numbers, head down to my local pd or SO, and ask them to run them. tell them you are interested in buying a firearm from an individual and want to make sure everything is straight. if it comes back no record on file, u can ask for a print out of that, buy the weapon in good faith, and get a notorized bill of sale for your records. attach print out to bill of sale and you have just covered yourself in the event it is stolen and not reported. then you have a paper trail to prove you took the right path to aquire, plus if need be you have proof of purchase and value needed to file a civil suit to re-coup purchase price. if it does come back stolen, give the officers everything they need to catch the bastard who is selling stolen weapons. you just may help someone get their weapon back....just my .02

Re: Stolen or Not ?!?!?!?!

i bought a gun 10 yrs ago, had reservations about it, wrote the numbers down, had my local pd run them, came back with nothing, i purchased it, month later got a phone call that i needed come down to the pd, so i went..come to find out it was stolen, (when i bought it it just wasnt in the system yet)
they had record i ran it and wanted to know if i new where it was, as a result i lost the gun, and am still awaiting restition, although i did help put the asshole in prison for 10 yrs

Good advice. Never looked at it that way.

If its shady , just walk away. It doesnt matter what price. When tje police stop by and collect the evidence (your new gun) and have you waste a few days making statements.
Chances are you'll never see that $ you paid for it. Restitution is a joke. Lawsuits on deadbeat scumbags are a waste of time.
Its just not worth the headache

If you have a friend whom is a Police Officer... they can run it. Some turd burglar was trying to sell a gun online and I had a friend run it. Came back stolen and they called this guy and set up a sting. I felt pretty good about myself.....
