Curious as to how many of the rifle builders actually open up the trigger and touch the sear. I inquired on a rifle I was having built and the gunsmith told me he wouldn't touch the sear on a Remington 700 because it was very thinly chromed and you wouldn't want to remove that coating. Don't know if that's true or not. If anyone has a link as to how to (or not to stone a sear) please pass it along. I've always just heard of adjusting the three screws. Perhaps this works 95 percent of the time and that's why that's all you hear about?

They can be stoned but if its overdone the trigger pull can go below 2.5 lbs(approx) and lower than that it can "slam fire" or reach a point where the safety will not work properly(at all).Then you might as well buy another(timney, jewel or such).A timney can be found new for $100 if you shop around and its ready to go with no gunsmithing required.
There are some jigs made to aid such work. Most good gunsmiths can stone the engagement sear and adjust the trigger to 3.25 lbs such that the trigger is smooth and has a crisp break.

Personally I wouldn't do it on a bet. Yes, it's possible. But it isn't advisable.

Shop time should bill at about $50 an hour, it doesn't take long to get to the $125 for a new Timney. You can also try a Holland spring kit for $12, I've used them in old Remington triggers and it did OK. It took the trigger right to 2.5.

Stoning a chromed sear should not be considered.
The chrome will feel/flake fast enough with normal use at sear/striker contact area.
The OEM Rem nickle plated sear bars have the best options.

i have seen two rifle builders do two stock triggers of mine to include aftermarket springs....really really small springs....these triggers are down to about 2.5lbs let off, safely....

Heat resistant valve core springs of stainless steel with a left twist helical give a near perfect 1-1/2Lb trigger pull.
The LH helical will not engage the internal adjustment screw threads in the housing from harmonics/vibration/continued shooting,with decades of service.

I have used Wolff springs for quite some time. I buy them 10 at a time because one of my friends seems to need one.
They are cheap and take a Remington down to 3# or so with no other work(most of the time).
