Advanced Marksmanship Straight back recoil, not happening

During my shoot every time I sent a round down range my cross hairs would come off the target to the right. (I'm left handed)

I tried to square off my shoulders, tried to make sure my back was straight behind the rifle etc... I even tried to exaggerate my body position to the left but no luck.

I'm going to take some pictures while prone for you guys and maybe you can help me figure out what I'm doing.

BTW, I'm shooting an AIAW with a SAS suppressor.

The one question i do have at this point is that I've read that the harris bipod tend to hop a bit. I'm not one to blame the gear but at this point I really don't know what else to try.

Any help would be appreciated.

If you want this diagnosed online I would recommend video taping it from several angles, because a still image doesn't tell the whole story.

Yes, video tape it shooting live rounds, 5 is enough, with each shot showing a different angle will help. <span style="font-style: italic">(don't worry about showing the target, just the shots from your end)</span>

How far is the rifle moving off target ? If it is less than 1.5 mils off center I wouldn't be sweating it, at that point it is more a finesse thing. Although a more forgiving bipod might suck you in the last little bit.

Start with a basis of understanding for what's important. What's important is a consistent relationship between the shooter, gun, and ground. There are five factors which describe the relationship: elbows, grip, non-firing hand, stockweld, and butt-to-shoulder. The goal is to build the position so as to inspire consistent recoil, which will serve to minimize angular error. Getting a position allowing for straight recoil is useful as straight means less angularity between line of bore at rest and line of bore at bullet exit. It's the subtle inconsistent angularity, caused by elbows, grip, stockweld, non-firing hand, and butt-to-shoulder which are not in agreement between shot strings which encourage shot displacement as distance to target increases.

sterling shooter made some good points. Actually that's what I'm trying to do. But when my reticle jumps, I start from scratch again.

No I'm off way more than that. my cross hairs are coming of the target completely at times. At a minimum I'm off by 5-8 mils.
It's quite a bit. Hence my frustrations.
I was all over my mat yesterday, body left, body right, square sholders etc, etc... trying to get some consistancy.

Let me ask you, again not to blame gear but can you elaborate on the bipod? Is the harris problematic in this?

I'll work on getting the video up as soon as I get an assistant. Maybe I can get lipstick 06 to help.

BTW, any input you can give me from the pics. Does my back look straight, at all,LOL!!!??

First, do what Lowlight says.

Second, and although I am not up to speed with most of these guys . . .

I do have a degree in Human Biomechanics and have spent a lot of time reviewing body positioning in photos. (very dull work).

From the photos, it seems to me that your shoulders are not square to the rifle.

Your spine appears to curve slightly. Your crotch is behind the rifle and moves "out" offset from the center-line of the rifle enough that you curve toward the rifle. Like a parenthesis )

Just the input from the cheap seats.

With a heavy AI and suppressor it is not the rifle, it is you. The Harris is not the problem.

Sterling has good points, you are manipulating something wrong, or inconsistently.

I have struggled with this as well. Sometimes I could get it right, others I simply couldn't and for the life of me I could not figure out why. I tried swivelling around like you mention and what it came down to for me was that I was not relaxing my shoulders. Now, even if I am not perfectly square, but perfectly relaxed into my NPA, the reticle only moves 2-3 mils. If I am square, the movement is almost nil. Starting to get it right was definitely the most difficult part. Once you get the feel for it, it is much easier to recognize when you get it, when you don't and why.

The other thing I began to notice when swivelling was that there are what I'll term angle thresholds. In an effort to control the jump, I would exaggerate the angle to the right (I'm right-handed) hoping that would offset the jump to the left that I was getting. Sometimes (when I was fully relaxed) the rifle would jump to the right instead of the left. That is when the light went off in my head because if I wasn't fully relaxed the rifle jumped horribly to the left. I am a thick guy and I had an angle issue at the shoulder pocket that was aggravated by my muscles not being fully relaxed. Bringing the rifle angle back to the left, more inline with my spine, and then fully relaxing my shoulders finally created some consistent success.

I really wish I could get down to RO. Trial and error sucks, especially for people like me who tend to way over-analyze the situation.

your right my back is to the left a bit in some. I'm trying to over correct if you would.

What I have't tried though is to go right a bit, I just focused going left, setting up like Frank and Jacob taught us.

When I was at RO i remember that I felt a bit weird when my body was straight behind the rifle. I wasn't used to the position hence the feeling.

Your left shoulder is farther back and higher than your right.

I would bet that there is muscular tension in your shoulders to hold them like that.

Try getting into possition without proping your torso up with you ebows, arms straight out, don't use your back muscles either. Is your shoulder at the same level as the recoil pad? I prefer my shoulder to contact high on the rifle, as it is more in line with the bore, and more comfortable for me.

I am not saying I do it right, but there is no verticle force on my elbows at all, they lay on the ground, not prop me up. The goal is to have as little muscle tension as possible, only enough to control the rifle through recoil. With an AI, this is pretty easy, they are heavy.

It is hard to tell from pictures, I might be way off base.

no actually your somewhat right. What i prefer (feels better) is I tend to tuck my elbows close to the body, this tends to support my weight a bit more. Otherwise I tend to get too much pressure on my neck. So you're kind of right.Again this is more comfortable for me.

Maybe the whole rifle is a bit to high so instead of bringing the rifle down I bring my body up a bit.

I'm going to do some more dry firing this weekend and I'll play with my arms and vertical body position.

My "gut" tells me that your hips are tight and some stretching could loosen them up. The would allow the hips to lay "flatter."

You could be holding the rifle too tight. I'd like to see a closeup of your grip on the stock.

You could also just take the easy way out and drink a bottle of SpinD before each range session.

I actually do better when I tighten up on the grip a bit. It's not a grip issue. It's a body position issue. I was planning on going to the range this week but that plan got blown out of the water. Hopefully next week.

I'd never heard so much about this topic before finding this site and I have to say i struggled to avoid getting the hop for a while. I'm shooting a 308 with no brake/moderator off a harris and off a hard floor mostly. Three things helped me a lot

1. dial down the scope power, no more than 12x now vs 22x at 100 yrd - focus more on me and less on the target
2. getting a good cheek (vertical if that makes sense vs your slightly canted in the first pic) position and the relationship here to the bag is important. I don't think there is nearly enough attention as to actually how to manipulate and maximise the benefit of your non shooting hand
3. i might be wrong on this but i really try to exaggerate loading the bipod by pushing forward and slightly down. I'm using my toes quite a bit which i've found has helped me load better and reduced movement.

I'm not perfect but i can at least spot my shots impacting now and i'm a skinny midget. Just bought the Atlas and hope that will help me a little more too.

I like your take on things, TJ. Another problem I've seen is people who use a bipod that is too high for their body position. The more your body can contact the ground (while maintaining a good cheek weld and prone position), the more you can control the recoil. If you're propping yourself up, the gun will have a big effect. I shoot a .308 without a break and 175gr SMKs going 2750, so recoil is not as nice as the guys running brakes. Either way you look at it, the amount of recoil shouldn't compromise your shooting position if you're doing things properly.

I to have this same problem,and I also shoot left handed.I am by no means an expert,but what works for me is to wrap my sling around my left arm.It doesnt work everytime but helps me in trying different positoins.Before I started this I never saw an impact.This by no means a fix,but a starting point for me.Hope it helps.

Couple things I noticed: being square behind the rifle doesn't mean the rifle is in the middle of your face. It means the rifle is in line with your body which should be straight - the first shot your neck is not straight on the cheekpad - almost like you don't have natural POA. Second, the left shoulder is down (second and fourth its elevated), the right shoulder is elevated on the first, but your left hip is up (always). If we drew a line from your gluteal cleft (butt crack) to the middle of you neck - that line is NOT parallel with the line of the rifle; the third photo is even worse. I wonder if we got your hips flat, & fixed what I think is POA issue, left shoulder even with right, we might fix this. With your current posture, "straight" behind the rifle should have the muzzle pointing just to the right of that doggie cage post in front of you.
BTW, when I have "jump" issues, for me personally its because the butt stocks too light and might neck muscles not strong enough.

We took some 2" Bright tape across the top the shoulders of a close fitting tee shirt and down the spine a T. It was very informative, body errors jumped out. Not a cure for all errors but it helps even a non proffesional instructor spot possible some alignment errors .

Who teaches that you must be straight behind the rifle? Most favor a 10-20 degree cant. The Army taught me to offset some. We were shooting M14's in basic and then transitioned to the M16 before going to Vietnam (1969). Straight behind the rifle will beat up your collarbone or position the rifle too high in the shoulder pocket. Your elbows will also be too tight and high.

If you load that bipod, pull the stock firmly back into the shoulder pocket, have a firm handshake grip with your thumb pointing forward and not wrapped around the grip, you will do much better. You also need a good rear bag.

Rifles Only also teaches it that way. When you do get into that perfect position it work like magic. I've only had that magic moment a very very few times. But when it does happen it really is amazing how the rifle recoils. I almost can't put it into words. I'm actually tearing up just thinking about it.

We teach classes full of military folks of the top tier variety and they all know the benefits of being straight behind the rifle... lowest common denominators can do what they want, it really doesn't matter, as well a competition where you get 20 minutes to shoot 10 rounds, with spotters provided... you can do what you want you have no need or interest in spotting your own shots, they do it for you automatically.

Everything in context... but then again Tactical Shooting is NOT F Class.

Why do I need to check with anyone ? Vern is a great guy, excellent instructor, however his training is also from Vietnam, we have progressed a little since 1969.

The canted method worked when people shot with slings, however we are not shooting with slings we use bipods, and rests, slings work better with the cant, tactical shooting and bipods don't... in fact, its a proven concept that being off to the side prohibits you from seeing your own impact... recoil exploits any weakness, including the angle between the rifle and shoulder.

It's been demonstrated at nauseaum -- so, good for you or anyone else who shoots off the side, take away your spotter and you better hit the target the first time because generally you'll have no idea where your impact went. I shot Barrett's MRAD today at 1000 yards and called my own hits before the spotter saw them. My 130 pounds behind a 338LM and I still saw my own hits, everytime, the reticle stayed on target.

If not, my suggestion to you is give it a try, but try it long enough to give it a chance to show you how the rifle handles recoil. I shit you not, the rifle just goes straight back. One never loses view of the target and can see hits with ease.

LL- Your points are well taken. I appreciate your input. I've been shooting for many years and the slight offset works for me. I may only be about 10 degrees off center, but I can always call my shots, see my hits, and when conditions permit, my trace. On black targets I can't see my target hits, but on steel, I can... everytime at point of impact. My recoil 'bounce' is no more than the target black. The slight offset allows me a better NPA, shoulder pocket hold, and cheekweld. I also see my glass better. I use a NF 12-42x56 NXS and a McMillan A5 Stock. Everyone is different. I haven't shot with a sling since my Vietnam days. I've tried the straight behind method and it doesn't work as well as the slight offset for me. It may be ok for other shooters, though. I don't have a problem with that. The bottom line is what is printing on the target.

Rick, maybe try this as a method for getting into position:

1. Keep your neck straight in line with the target;

2. Bring the rifle into your sholder, then obtain the cheek weld;

3. Spread you elbows;

4. Pull the rifle into your shoulder using only light finger pressure from the first joints of the fingers of your shooting hand;

5. straighten your left leg so that your left calf is in line with the rifle.

Then relax and check your NPA.

When you pose a question of who teaches shooting straight behind the rifle, then expect a simple response. If you wanted to know why or bring up the never ending debate between straight behind vs. canted, then ask that question.

Well guys I finally got the video done and posted on youtube.

Let me know what you guys see as far as not into a good position.

Jack (some of you know him) took the video and pointed out the dragging wood, so that I;m now aware of.

Also, since the time of the OP I'm now using the small muzzle pocket on my mat to stick my bipod leg into and help me lock it in while I load it. It makes a world of difference.

I don't see the rifle moving as much as you are moving between each shot... you're re-adjusting your body position between every shot, so there is an issue there, maybe an NPA thing, because you shouldn't be moving that much. The rifle is barely moving from what I can see.

Do you notice multiple shot groups, like 3 in one hole, 2 in other, or even 2, 2 and 1... that is from the shooter moving between each shot.

The dragging wood, possibly an issue, as well I would almost say you need to raise the bipod to bring your head straighter -- this might be why your adjusting so much your head looks awfully leaned over.

Body looks straight, especially for a left handed shooter, again, I see more movement on your part than the rifles, so I think its an NPA / Position / Relaxation issue.

You're very right on my moving around. I notice that I fidget A LOT between shots when I shoot, and I do have a bad habit of picking up my head in between shots causing the 2 groups like you mentioned.

The reason the rifle isn't moving is because I locked the bipod in the little pocket on my mat. It really helps with the "hop".

Let me make sure I understand what you're saying about my head. You think it's too far to the side??? What do you mean by bring my head straighter?

Some times with certain people they need to bring the rifle up a bit, or even down so that their head is resting on the cheek piece at less of an angle. So experiment with raising the bipod a bit / just a notch or two to see if that helps you keep your head straighter to the rifle. It just appears to be very rolled over.

It appears to be your most abrupt angle, otherwise the movement as stated is you. The rifle seems to recoil fine, as in very little.

So other than the head and the fidgeting you don't see anything that jumps out at you as f***ed up??

No, again the rifle is recoil in a straight minimum fashion, so I don't see anything glaring other than your movement between shots.
