Is there anyone in the US/Canada who is modifying the AR platform to a straight pull/bolt action mechanism and doing so with a high level of workmanship ? Thx

Re: Straight pull AR

White Oak Precision did one for me. Straight pull, side charging handle, and no gas port/system on the barrel.

Cool, but the one in the pictures above has a non reciprocating charging handle, too. No gas system, so it doesn't move except when pulled.

who makes this

I haven't had a chance to shoot a system like this, I'm wondering is this just a way of combining the Ar parts and accessories with a bolt action style gun that stays locked in place until the shooter cycles it?

I understand they're popular in places where centerfire semiautos are verboten, like Britain.

Re: Straight pull AR

Back to the OP's original question, while there are places in the US where there are restrictions on centerfire semiautos, the restriction pertain to evil feature like pistol grips, flash suppressors, magazine capacity and detachable magazines, not to semiauto function per se. So there isn't much interest in non-semiauto ARs here.

In a ban state, I suspect building one of these with a combination of features otherwise satisfying the definition of an an assault rifle could lead to a test case, which would be won, given proper representation, but would be a major trauma for the victim.

In free states, the attitude would be "what's the point?".

JonA, is that a repeater or semiauto? And whose handguard is that?

Re: Straight pull AR

I recognise it isn't going to be common in the US but thought I would ask. We can get them made in the UK but the lead time runs into months in some instances and there are only a couple of quality manuf. Plus i was curious to see if anyone in the US had tackled the issue differently or had something interesting worth seeing.

Re: Straight pull AR

Side chargers are popular among NRA Highpower competitors shooting Match Rifle classified "spaceguns" because they allow you to use an adjustable-height cheekpiece without interfering with charging. It is also easier(for some, anyways) to open/charge the bolt from the side when you are slung up and in position. It is a very useful upgrade for this type of shooting.

As Oodin said, that is a Troy Extreme rail. The rifle is a semiauto the same as any other AR. Other than the upper receiver and the modified carrier it uses, it's just like any other AR.

Expensive as it may be, the ASA is really nice for an application like this. It doesn't interfere with the scope, you can work it while in the shooting position without taking your shooting hand off the grip or your eye out of the scope and you can still utilize a dust cover to keep the dirt out and if you're a reloader you can still use a brass catcher which is difficult with many side chargers.

I like your mount. Does it come in 30mm? Or other heights?

When I was searching, that's where I saw the side chargers most...when guys were talking about their "match rifles". Another name that kept popping up during my search was Medesha Firearms. He does something similar to what I had done to my rifle.
