I got a chance today to do some long range shooting with the LMT MWS and my .223 SDM clone rifle out to 700 yards. I was able to take shots with the .223 AR all the way out to 700, but due to lack of ammo only got to 600 with the mws. The targets I was shooting were about 20"x30" hanging steel plates. Ammo used in the MWS was 175gr privi OTM with a 1-4x accupoint with the triangle reticle for optics. I don't have a ton of pics as I was busy shooting the rifle and not the camera.

Any way here is a video of me firing of the bipod at the steel target at 500 yards:

The group I shot off the bipod was on the left target with 5 hits. As you can tell I am no sniper, but I feel confident with more practice and better ammo it will have no trouble shooting tiny groups. As you can tell, my windage is a little off on the group I fired off the bipod. I was at 1.5moa left at 600 and when I fired that group didn't think the wind call would vary that much, needless to say I mis-estimated my windage. The right target is off sandbags with the mws and my sdm clone so there is nothing to really report about it.

As far as the MWS as goes, I really see potential in the DMR role. I need to find better ammo, because the best group I shot of the day was just a hair over 1" off bags at 100 yards getting an initial zero. Winchester q3130 was a big let down, no better than 3-4" groups at 100 so I didn't even use them at any further ranges. Just for reference, I shot a group a little under 1" with my SDM rifle off bags at 100 yds.

The trigger on the MWS is basically identical to the gieselle SSA that is in my sdm. Going from each rifle and back led to no difference in feelings of the triggers.

The trijicon accupoint, a let down in my opinion. Yet I realize its a combat scope, but compared to my leupold mk4 mr/t the glass in the trijicon is extremely hazy and almost makes the targets look distorted at ranges over 300 yards. The adjustments were very crisp and very repeatable, but I felt like I was straining my eyes looking through the trijicon at 400-600 yards.

I must say, the hornady ballistics calculator was dead on for both rifles. I got first round hits with both rifles all the way out to 600 yards using the comeups generated by hornady. I used a MV of 2400FPS with a bc of .49 for the 175gr privi's.

I didn't get to try the MWS at 700 due to running out of ammo and wanting to shoot my .223 at that distance but I have no doubt making hits out there is no problem for this rifle.

Now I just need to find a load that shoots well and find a better optic and head back to the 700 yard line again. Very fun day.

.490 bc....huh that's decent specs for a .308. what's the twist rate? curious to see if it likes 168's & 155's. thanks for the update.

Nice shooting!

Not to be critical, your shooting position is fine however I've found that you get the best recoil management with your body in line with the bore of the rifle (straight back). If you notice the muzzle in your video goes to the left upon recoil, if you just scoot your entire body over to the right so your weapon shoulder is straight behind the rifle you can eliminate that muzzle movement.

Your position is good but I would only use it if getting straight behind the rifle is not possible due to a wall behind you or the terrain etc.

Good review though.

Thanks, that was actually the first time I had ever fired a rifle off of a bipod. I guess I did that natuarally because I usually use a shooting sling and an m1a, but I will start practicing a more inline position and see what happens.

As far as the .49 BC, that is just what I came up with in a quick internet search for the BC of a 175gr OTM bullet. I have no idea how accurate the MV or BC number I used were as I do not have a chronograph.

Re: Streching out the MWS

Looking good, keep at it. I've taken mine to 800 yards and am pleased. I'll get some photos next time out. I'd suggest you check out the Rifles Only on line training, best $10.00 a month I've spent lately. For ammo try the Priv 168g, M118LR and American Eagle M1A 168g OTM. They are all sub moa in my LMT and I get them locally for under $17.00 a box. The mil surplus and white box ammo won't get you where you want to be.
Just curious but is the 175g Priv a true OTM or is it a FMJ with an open base?

I really don't know about the 175gr privi. It is a hollow point bullet, but beyond that I am unsure.

Re: Streching out the MWS

Good shooting. Groups like that are all most of us would even need at that range, and Im sure it will still group similarly for another few hundred yards. Very acceptable for a 16" chrome lined .308.
