Hey guys,
Ive been trying to use Strelok free before possibly buying shooter for android. Strelok seems more user friendly and is of course, free! I tried looking at shooter and got pretty intimidated. A mentor at the range spotted for me and used his software (I think ballistic AE) and printed me a sheet of my supposed dope, I think its pretty accurate, but haven't had time to check it since. I've been unable to simulate it successfully in Strelok. I'm not sure if I'm doing something wrong, or if the software isn't compatible with my setup. Any help would be appreciated, thank you!

I set:
zero distance 100 yards
scope height 1.97
vert click 0.1
Hor. click 0.1

Bullet weight: 175 grains
Ballistic coefficient to 0.496
bullet speed to 2650
temp at 65
temp sensitivity factor 1.4

In another session, my dope was similar to his, but slightly different:
300 yard was 1.1 mils
500 yard was 3.1 mils
600 yard was 4.2 mils

My setup is a R700 5R with a 6-24x50 Vortext PST ffp.
I'm relatively new to precision shooting and my rounds fired count is still under 500 so please be gentle! I'm still learning and respect any and all advice given. Thank you again!

Your dope is going to be different than his, they were calculated on different apps and with different methods. Unless something has changed, the free version of Strelok does not allow for banded BCs whereas he is using banded G1 BC's. How close are your calculations to what you are actually seeing? How did you come up with the 2650 fps, was it on a chrono or was it an estimate?

You may choose to purchase Strelok Pro, it's cheap and it does work pretty well. The pro version will allow you to use the G7 model and can use the truing function to really hone in your dope as well.

hey Zombiemonkey,
thank you for replying. He was spotting for me, and inputting my results on his ballistic app as my shots hit, so he says its my dope not his. I'm not sure what banded BCs are, I was using the data from my mentor's printout. The 2650 FPS came from the printout, it was not a chrono, but an estimate or what i assumed was a calculation from his app, but it seems far off in strelok. I honestly do not know my FPS, all I have is the dope i collected from 2 range sessions. The 300, 500, 600 I got, and the one he produced for me on that sheet (different day). I've been trying to use strelok to match the dope, but I cant get it match right.

If it were between strelok pro and shooter, which one would you choose?

I understand that it is a chart he made for you and not for his particular rifle/setup. However, different programs will calculate things differently and there are different ways to calculate things such as G1, a banded G1, or G7, etc. His is calculated with a banded G1 BC as you can tell by the changing BC for different velocity bands, your free version of Strelok will not do that unless that is now available in the free version.

So he made the dope chart based on real world values? How does his chart match up to what you have seen with real world shooting on your own when you are not with him? How far off is your Strelok? Again, all of these programs are a calculated guess (albeit a damn good one sometimes) and will get you close, you still need to true your data to what you are seeing in the real world if you really want the best dope for your particular setup.

Strelok Pro isn't bad, though I would say Ballistic AE is a better program with more features. I have found Strelok Pro to be fairly close, though I think Ballistic AE is even closer.

Ah gotcha, sorry for misunderstanding. His dope chart is fairly close to what I've experienced, its closer than what I've gotten from strelok (free). I'm guessing its because of the g1 / g7 thing you spoke of. When i tweak strelok to match my 600 yard dope, it's about 1/10 of a mil off for other ranges like 300 and 500.

It seems most likely I'll have to buy one of the apps that are paid, I'm on a budget and trying to keep it below 10 bucks otherwise id get advanced ballistics or ballistics AE. It seems most likely I will have to end up buying Shooter for android or Strelok+

Thank you again for your knowledge and advice Zombiemonkey, I really appreciate it, it's been driving me crazy trying to get my dope to align on strelok.

I understand the budget, but there are some things you get with the paid apps that you just do not get out of the free apps. You guys both used G1 calculations, he just used a more advanced version using banded G1 BCs, it's things like that you do not get in the free stuff.

The BC you wrote is wrong, it's .496 and that is usually a good number to use.

try fixing that, I am a bit confused, what was your dope used and what did the computer say?

1/10th a mil is a .36 of an inch, your bullet is .30, trust me you can shoot that good a group at any distance. If you are .1 off consider it right.

lowlight you are right about my post, I have it right on my phone/calculator, but wrong here haha, I've edited it.

I'm trying to compete in local matches, and they have stages where the distances could range anywhere from 15 yards (curveball) to 635. The matches are tremendously fun and because the targets could be at 345, 540, so on so forth, I'm trying to get a really strong accuracy going with a calculator.

And 1/10th is more accurate than you think, you're fine so don't sweat it and just shoot.

Odds are the targets will absorb any error, on top of your own accuracy issues from lack of experience. 635 is nothing and believe me the 1/10th will not be the reason you miss during a match with mid range distances to 600 yards.

Thanks lowlight, I appreciate the advice/info, I don't quite have a solid understanding how much 1/10 of a mil really is, I figured at 600 yards it could be the difference between hitting and not. Most of error probably lies with me the shooter haha.

You need to chrono your rounds to get accurate results from ballistic apps. Strelok has trajectory validation where you imput your actual results and it reduces the error in calculations. What ever you choose to use stick with it and learn how the app works. You will get more accurate results.
