Hunting & Fishing Stuck-up guide

So, I contact this dude in Alaska about going on a guided hunt up there in 2012 (for my 50th), and he's cooperative/friendly until he finds out I'm not rich ... I say it'd be a one-time thing for me, and he told me not to come! Ever heard of someone not being willing to take 18k from you because you aren't going to come back? I think he's the North end of a South-bound horse.

Personally, I spent a good year, lurking and learning, before I knew enough to even ask my first question.


But, to the OP, I agree, find another guide willing to take yer cash.
There's an old saying, 'If you loan somebody $20, and you never see them again. . . It was worth it.'

I hunted in Alaska, Dall Sheep, several years ago. Had a great hunt and bagged my ram. The guide that I used was Mike Litzen guide service. He had great accomadations and everything about the hunt was top notch. I would recommend him and will be going back to hunt with him someday when I can save up enough to take my son along when hen gets a little older.

Hahaha, good call. Was about to post something similar (even though I'm a new guy too) before I read the replies...

OP, good luck with your search, what are you hunting for? I did a litte research on guided hunts in Alaska as well, and there are several to be had. Keep on looking, and good luck (post up a review of your own after you get back!).

Thanks everyone for the recommendations/etc. I will definitely cheack them out, and follow-up and post info/a pic after I go, although it will be awhile (next year, 2012). It shouldn't be too tough to find someone cheaper, and more in need of business!

Dave, him not takin your 18k is probably a blessing in diguise.
I would think knowing this was a once in a lifetime hunt he could go out of his way to make it one. He was looking for a big tip after the hunt I'll bet.

I have a bit of a different outlook on the OP's issue.

I think the guide may have be really insightful. He may have quickly figured out that no way should that guy be spending that kind of money on a hunt. When it is "once in a lifetime" it might be better just not doing it. And the once in a lifetime hunter is likely to have unrealistic expectations that no one could meet. Read too many 1950's Outdoor Life stories....

I have gone on many guided and outfitted hunts and few were worth the money. Some were worth much more.

I know guys that build really expensive rifles and do not care to take the time to explain to some guy why the thing cost 50,000. It is just easier to deal with a client who in concerned about what caliber to do next. And there are plenty of guys like that.

Than may show integrity on the guides part. Most good outfitters can and will book all their hunts with hunters who have reasonable expectations and not be streached to do so. It is kind of sad to see some one spend money on what he can ill afford.
Those moose hunts have gotten outragious. I remember in the Yukon and NWT in the 80's and 90's you could shoot a moose for 2000-3000 over the cost of a sheep hunt. I think Alaska was about the same, but do not know as I have only hunted Kodiak in AK. I can say that I never shot a moose as I would not take one as a gift. I passed many large ones in BC, NWT and the Yukon. Quite a stupid animal.

Just my two cents, but the guide may not have wanted to assume the full weight of having to deliver the goods to someone who is putting all their chips on the table for a blind draw on a pair of fours.

Nothing against you at all, but that may be more than the guy wants to have to worry about.
Sure, he can control some variables, but weather and others are completely out of his hands. So I could see how he'd just as soon not get tied up in a "make-a-wish" hunt.

Being a guide is stressful as hell! $18 large is a lot of money to pay, and a lot of money to get paid. Sometimes guides only do a few hunts a year, and they can't handle the stress of not delivering. Most guides I know are booked up as soon as the tags are out and lots of return clients. I recently started running a charter fishing business and I get stressed over a $1000 fishing trip that desn't go well. Keep looking for a guide, you will find one confident enough to take you on.

Who is the guide?

Hunts are booked well in advanced and clients are/were a plenty. While I do not take the guides side, maybe he thought he would lose a hunt and with so few avail and so many wanting one, maybe he made a business decision.

Guiding is full of stress. It is not getting paid to go on a hunt. Being responsible for someone 24 hours a day for 5-10 days or even one day is quite stressful and unless you have worn them boots and know.......That is for another topic.

I think there is some confusion here between hunting and buying. Before I called a moose stupid I would put a 65+ on the wall by actually hunting it. I've hunted some big bulls that made me look stupid.
When you are involved in a procuerment exercise you don't see all the scouting, camp prep, and logistics that make it look easy. And there is also that small detail of packing them out. I also think if you took all of the game located with the aid of aircraft out of B&C and Safari club records you could put the AK portion of the record book on a post card.

You'll get quite a bit for 18k in Africa. Best of all would be if you could get someone local to find you a guide & package without them knowing you're from the States els they load the price...

I've been to Alaska twice and I doubt I'll go again. I've also been to South Africa twice and do plan to go there again. On my last trip to Alaska, I paid close to as much for 3 days of hunting as I did for each of my South Africa trips which were 2 to 3 weeks long and my Alaska trip was a "bargain."

For 18K you can get a VERY NICE Africa hunt for a lot more than one animal. You will have good food, it won't snow and probably won't rain and you won't be sleeping on the ground or in a hovel. You also won't have to deal with mosquitos or black flies. Also, the outfitters and professional hunters there by and large aren't jerks and will appreciate getting your money.

But, if you like to suffer, go to Alaska.

Bob,
I am sure I have passed moose over 65". You live in AK where the super cub is king. It is not like that in parts of NWT, and little scouting is done. It was backpacking and horse back trips. Little or no resident pressure. You do not see small planes all day. More wilderness, less people. Moose stand around and look at you. That has been my expirence. I have not hunted the Alaska moose that keep an eye in the sky for resident hunters in float planes or with tundra tires.

I'm with the other guys in the goto Africa camp. Awesome hunts at a great price. I suggest a plains game hunt plus buffalo. I think you would rather enjoy it. Not to mention you won't have to freeze your ass off doing it. Also, don't take this the wrong way, but a african hunt is alot less physically taxing. Riding around in a landcruiser is alot better than hiking up/down mountains in snow or rain....all the time. Either way, good luck.

A lot of guides have return customers. They favor these customers, as they provide a steady income for them. Unfortunately, the only way to hunt Alaska for a non resident is with a guide (or so I was told). I hate dealing with guides. I like caping, quartering, tracking my own animals. Also, I dont see how it is so rewarding to kill an animal if all a hunter is doing is pulling the trigger? I dont want someone to find an animal for me. I hate guides. Hunting is becoming a rich man's sport too!!! I have heard that it is cheaper to hunt Africa than Alaska from someone that has made 20 or so trips to Africa. He said you just have to know where to go. I do think guides are needed in some situations, but I hate dealing with them for the same reasons you do. I am not rich!!!

At least list him name, company info, website, and/or area so everyone knows who NOT to call!!!!
