Styer A3?

Do anyone have a Styer A3? I am thinking of getting one, any good or bad on this rifle?

Well there is the fact that Styer sold .50 cal bolt guns to Iran which were found in the hands insurgents killing US soldiers. At least MSAR isn't supplying the bad guys.

I like the fact that with the 16" barrel the overall lenght is the same as an AR15 with a 10" barrel.

Sort of like a SBR without the paperwork and tax stamp.

I haven`t heard anything bad about the A3 version- does seem like the price is a bit high for a service rifle with no sights.

I understand that Steyr has stopped production for the moment so I doubt we`ll see the price go down.

Bullpups suck in the real world. As a "fun" range gun, ok. Try transitioning with one, no go especially if it ejects to the side. Reloading at some sort of speed, no go. It goes on and on.

There is a reason why SF units from every country that issue bullpups carry M4's or equivalent (Britain, France, Australia, etc.)

I've not had the opportunity to shoot a Styer A3 but have the Microtech version, if the trigger on the A3 is anything like the MSAR I'd pass. Hands down the worst trigger I've ever felt on a rifle.

Thanks for the responses. I was looking at it for the shortness of the rifle for entry only. I was thinking of putting a Surefire mini can on it. I do currently carry a LWRC 6.8 with a YHM but it is pretty long and heavy. Just looking at ways to trimming the weight for entry gun. Only at the experimental stages.

Bullpups are good if you need to maneuver, enter tight spaces, etc. In other words - good tactical rifles. Bullpups <span style="text-decoration: underline">often</span> have worse triggers than traditional designs. People are seldom indifferent to bullpups - it's either love or hate.

Steyr AUG isn't the cheapest rifle on the market - and the fact that several countries picked it as their main service rifle (and several more equip their Special Forces with it) speaks well for AUG.

My <span style="text-decoration: underline">personal</span> observations: it has great - almost perfect - ergonomics (much better <span style="text-decoration: underline">for me</span> than M16 or AKM), it's compact without losing on the barrel length (I've seen available 16" 1:9 twist, 20", and 24" 1:7 twist). I love the grip and the balance. Extremely practical in the field, peerless as a tactical rifle - especially CQB and mid-range. Easy to clean, shoots well when dirty. Changing barrel is a 10-seconds procedure. It feels (to me) lighter than it is - probably because of its better balance (than traditional design).

<span style="text-decoration: underline">Shortcomings</span>. Trigger is not great and might interfere with long-range (for this caliber) shooting - I can't comment as I haven't shot AUG beyond 200m. Not as accurate as M4 or AR15 (especially a tricked-out AR15). Not as convenient shooting weak hand though it can be done (as I've done it). I had difficulty laying well-aimed fire left-handed (since one can convert the bolt to left-handed - this would not be a problem for the southpaw, only for us "straight" guys when having to shoot the "other" side). For those used to AK or M16 (like myself

) magazine change wasn't as fast (though people who trained with AUG as their main battle rifle did quite well with mag change speed).

<span style="text-decoration: underline">Summary</span>. I love this rifle. Positive experience with it - especially how it handles - led me to try other bullpups, and I found another darling among bolt-action precision rifles - DTA SRS whose trigger is equal to or better than triggers on many bolt action rifles of traditional design.

Thanks for your comment, I have decided to go with the MSAR in 6.8 SPC. I currently use a LWRC 6.8 with YHM suppressor. The gun is too long and heavy for doing entries and also too long in rapid deployments from vehicle ( Stake outs ). I also have a MP5K with a Gemtech, now that is short, but the round 9mm is not sufficient when time I am up against the 7.62X39 and vest wearing suspects. I only plan on short distance with this rifle. Any longer distance I will use the LWRC.

the bolt being right next to your head doesnt help and the porting for the gas system doesnt seem to lend itself to suppression, Ive tried a couple of bullpup platforms including a PS-90 shortend to a P-90 length and it sucked bigtime, fukin smoke/gas everywere, had to split the receiver to clean it

Hmm, in my experience with AUG cleaning was a breeze. Never touched PS90, can't comment there.

And even if you choose 18" or 24" barrel (rather than 14" or 16") - the rifle is still compact enough to be manageable/portable/buildings-ready.

the AUG wasnt dirty, piston guns generally arent, just sucked for suppression or lack of. the PS-90 is a blow-back gun,,,with the breech right by ur face,,,now imagine all the gas/smoke rollin out of that bitch suppressed

Speaking of bullpups, anyone tried keltecs RFB? Uses cheap (well used to be cheap) FAL mags, supposedly has a great tigger.

Really? Did you lay your hands on said rifles just as they where captured from the insurgents? Is this real world "fact, or just internet "fact" ...my brother-in-laws cousin who is a personal aid for Hillary Clinton in the State Dept. said that Iran had some Austrian rifles, blah, blah, blah... and is arming terrorists, blah, blah, blah.

This is the same kind of misinformation the media is reporting about American gun owners arming Mexican Narco-terrorists.

The information I received from reliable sources are these so-called Steyr HS-50 rifles the insurgents were capured with are a close copy of the Austrian HS-50, and built in Iran.

Question: So, when an IRA terrorist is caught with an AR-15 or a Mini-14, is the USA at fault? Should we blame Colt and Ruger? Ok we'll all boycott Colt and Ruger because they are arming the IRA!

Stepping down off the soap box.

I have a pre-ban AUG that I shoot on a regular basis, great little rifle, and very accurate, the only down-side is the trigger is a little weird, just like a Glock, but you get used to it. Plus this is the cleanest shooting 5.56 rifle I have next to my LMT gas piston rifle. The AUG runs any ammo you feed it, and is not picky like some other rifles can be.

I also have a new A3 with A3 scope, nice upgraded features, which I haven't had time to shoot yet. My only complaint for the A3 is I feel the rail is a little low and should have been made about 3/8" taller. To make the scope feel comfy/ergonomic, I will have to get a spacer (most likely a LaRue QD rail) to make the rifle/scope a better fit.

There are kits that improve the trigger feel. I got the trigger kit in mine and I'm impressed with how good it is. But nowhere near the stock trigger in my KelTec RFB. Now THAT trigger simply rocks!

I envy y'all who can consider suppressors! The People's State of MA doesn't seem to allow even cops to have cans.

So for me the suitability - or lack thereof - of AUG to be suppressed is 100% out of question.

Speaking of the AUG factory trigger - it's not outstanding, but acceptable. Yeah I've seen better - but this one is still usable, what can I say... And indeed there are kits - which I intend to try one day - that according to people who used them improve the performance greatly.

The trigger is still as awful as the original and clones. The accurracy is about the same. While the 1.5x donut of death optic certainly was not state-of-the-art, the A3 loses most if not all of its "sex appeal" (for lack of a better term) when comparing the older Austrian guns vs. the A3.

IMHO, the only good thing the A3 did was drive down the prices of the orignals for guys like me.

Well I appreciate all the comments, I have decided on a MSAR in 6.8 SPC which will arrive in 4 days. This way I can just swap mags with my LWRC which also sits in my trunk. As for putting a can on it, I still might give it a try.

What optics are you planning on using?
