Whats up guys, hoping some of the LEO's on the board can help me pick out a good pair of gloves. I lost a couple of pairs over the years and have tried hard not to buy any new ones. But after encountering a perp with scabies (sp?) i've decided its time to get another pair.

Re: Suggestions on gloves for LE use?

For "assault gloves" I like Oakleys. They are cheap and easy to replace. The knuckes take a beating and protect well. Noting like digging someone hands out from under them on pavement.

For just about everything else I like Mechanix "Stealth" gloves. They are exactly like their regular auto mechanics gloves, but with subdued logos. Those are my choice when I am on the long gun or doing entries where I am not breaching.

Re: Suggestions on gloves for LE use?

I have found that Mechanix Wear Impact Gloves have outlasted every pair of "tactical" gloves I have ever tried, or any glove for that matter. Great dexterity, and You can find them anywhere, but they are cheaper online. They are about half the price of Oakley gloves too.

As far as frisking and protection from unwanted diseases, these may not be ideal.

Re: Suggestions on gloves for LE use?

I found the fingers on the Oakley gloves are disproportionately short. I had to get 2xl to have them fit the finger of my size xl hands, which made the rest of the glove fit like crap.

I may have some long ass, ET style fingers, but that dont make me wrong.

Re: Suggestions on gloves for LE use?

+1 on the Mechanix gloves. I like the older M-Pact Stealth and the newer Impact Pro.

The Mechanix Tire Changer series are also pretty good. You get better protection (heavier fingers/palm, kevlar knuckle, longer cuff), but you give up some dexterity and they don't have the "stealth" colors. They also seem to have longer fingers.

However, if you're using them to search people with nasty stuff on them, or who are bleeding, or... Most of these gloves are porous and absorbent - so they can let nasty stuff through them and/or absorb to hold the nasty stuff against you. IMHO, nitrile gloves block stuff from getting on you, are disposable, and fairly puncture resistant -- in medical grade exam or surgical quality. They seem to slide better than latex, don't have the allergy issues, and seem tougher. They don't stretch as well as latex, so the size is important (the surgical ones seem to fit truer to size - but this may not be true for all brands).

Your local ER/hospital that does surgery should have some to try. A nearby coroner's office will have thicker ones.

Re: Suggestions on gloves for LE use?

thanks for the info.

I think i'm going with the Mechanix gloves posted above. I just need something that offers a barrier between me and them, and that if i have to get hands on they aren't going to disintegrate on the pavement. I work in NYC which means lots of concrete, abandoned houses, fences to jump, and perps with all kinds of weird shit in their pockets. Disease and exposure is important, but obviously i cannot have the best of both worlds.

Thanks for the input guys.

Re: Suggestions on gloves for LE use?

Be prepared to chuck them if they get bloody.

I once tossed a set of $60 Spectra Lined Leather "frisk" gloves after they got soaked in blood from a shitbag. Rookie mistake. The only way I would spend that much on gloves again is if they are bulletproof or give hand jobs.

Mechanix Original, best glove value. They come in black, cost only 25 bucks, fit great & lasts long time, pitch 'em when they get shotty and don't weep. They wash great. Synthetic leather palm - thin, strong & very tactile feel too!

Re: Suggestions on gloves for LE use?

I like the sage colored nomex flights, I cut the thumb and index on firing hand. If im doing entry or take down duties I like the oakleys

Re: Suggestions on gloves for LE use?

I am not a big fan of the Oakleys. I have owned probably 15 or more pairs of gloves over the past 8 years, and no other gloves broke at the seams as quickly. The mechanix are MY favorite for many reasons. They take a beating, don't break or rip, and are relatively cheap compared to the other gloves that I have owned.

Re: Suggestions on gloves for LE use?

The Oakelys have small fingers. My biggest problem with them was they were to tight between the thumb and fore finger. Could not get a good grip on handguns.

I have not tried the Mechanix, but will next.

I also like the Hatch marksman and the UnderArmour tactical glove. I recently bought a pair of the Blackhawk SOLAG w/kevlar, so far they seem to be nice. A little more $$$.

Re: Suggestions on gloves for LE use?

For patrol or SRT type stuff?

If your working patrol you want something thin and kinda slick for frisking and relatively cheap. They will be in and out of a lot of very gnarly pants. I 2nd the Mechanix line of gloves but a lot of the time I used the grey rubberized palm type work/utility gloves made out of stretchy cotton material. They are like 4 bucks a pair and the palms, being made out of slick non-porous rubber-vinyl slide in and out of pockets and waistbands good during pat downs. And more importantly, fluids can't penetrate the palms.
You can get them anywere, here's a random link just for the pic: ATLAS 370 black gloves

For SRT and warrant service type stuff I like the Oakleys and Mechanix line. I was given a pair of thin Petzl belaying gloves that work well too.

Re: Suggestions on gloves for LE use?

I get issued the hatch flight gloves and it only takes me about four weeks to blow them out, I just stopped using them. I'd rather buy my own gloves that last.

Re: Suggestions on gloves for LE use?

Man with all of you guys talking about what you wear for "assaults" and "SRT Operations" your making me feel worthless. I've been a LEO for 4 years, and I've been a part of one search warrant, yep 1! And i was basically standing by the car watching the door get taken down, and then "Ok you guys can go thanks for the help".

Best department in the world, yep that's what the pamphlet said.

But back on topic, i ordered the Mechanix gloves, thanks for all tips and stay safe out there.

Re: Suggestions on gloves for LE use?

I guess I missed the time frame but thaught id add one more option. I used the Black Hawk S.O.L.A.G gloves for most every thing. probably a little more than the Mechanix but I trusted them to protect my hands and to help me not bust my nuckels while clearing buildings or if knockin things (faces and such) with closed fists. thats my .02
