Night Vision Sunshade with night vision?

I currently have a Badger EFR installed on my .308 and my .338LM. The .338 runs a S&B 5-25 x 56 PM II. The .308 has a Bushnell ERS 3-21 x 50. My range is set up facing the west so most if the time I end up using a sunshade in the afternoons as I am looking into the sun. Right now I just keep the EFR rails off the gun but I may have the opportunity to get access to some night vision from a coworker. I assume I can't use a sunshade with the night vision correct? If I can then I will need to get taller rings. Currently I am running Badger rings (I think low or medium) on the S&B. I have Seeking tall rings on the Bushnell. Neither one is tall enough to use the sunshade with the rails installed. How or where to I measure to figure out what height rings I would need? Do I just measure the height of the rail and then the current rings and do the math from there to figure out how much more height I need? Sorry for the long and probably stupid question.

If the NV device is a clip on(intended to be clipped to the EFR), those generally have a 1.5" height over rail mount height. You would need the same for a scope mount +/- 10%.

While the sunshade should not be necessary, ability to leave it on would depend on the lenght of the shade, type of clip on, where the clip in is mounted to the efr, how far forward your scope is mounted..........again not necessary

Actually We have run into a situation on the DTI rifles where the Objective of a CNVD-LR sits WAY to close to the muzzle break. So we make a stack-able "moon shade" to protect the lens of the Clip On.

Whupps your right I should have read it better. Take the days scopes sunshade off when mounting a clip on. leaving it will push the Clip on unnecessarily far forward. As far as the day scopes position relative to the clip on, it depends which clip on the OP is going to have access to. My advice is do what you have to do to the day scope so that you get alignment with the clip on. While most will say just get the clip on sorta in front of the day scope and you will be fine, I am a huge proponent of lining OPTICAL center line up with Optical center line. Not doing this IS shorting yourself performance. You want the day scope to look exactly AND SQUARELY through zone 1 of the Image tube. Its where the resolution is the best and you have (hopefully) the fewest blemishes. Before all the posts start rolling in about the technology correcting every thing, it DOES have its limitations. Bending light, it's like racing, the less you have to turn the wheel the better.

Thanks for the replies. I figured the sunshade would have to be removed. I did not think about having to have both day and night sights lined up at the same height but it makes sense. I will have to take a look at his clip on and see what rings I will need to make it work best.
