I've found several around the 6# mark. This is going to be used for a vehicle weapon, so, cost is VERY important. I need the best, cheap ones $700ish ???

I would like the Saint pistol but i believe its over 1K ? I will add an inexpensive but decent optic. 1-4/1-6X, OR a red dot, re; Sig Romeo.

the optic needs to be good for close encouters 15-25yards out to a torso sized target at 100yards .

I have a sweet Seekins 14.5" with Leupold VX-6, got about $3,000 in it SO, dont want it to get stolen. if this new gun gets stolen or turned over to LE . ill only be out a grand.

thought about the ruger ranch rifle with 10 rnd mag, handy but slow to shoot multiple rounds .

suggestions, opinions?

For a "super light" AR15 you need to be prepared to assemble your own, or pay big bucks. I would not consider 6 lb "super light" though, or even anything special for a 16" AR15. Under 5 lb would be pretty light, and under 4 lb is possible and has been done at least a few times. I've done a 4.5 lb setup, but with a 12.5" barrel. Talking about weight of the gun and a mag but no optics.

A Colt 6720 weighs 6.3 pounds. There are several companies that make 16" pencil weights.

A Colt 6920 weighs 6.95 pounds - they are so common that most EE's on the net have a stack of them for cheap.


Build your own lower and buy a good quality (but inexpensive) upper from BCM, Colt, LMT.

My "light" gun is 7pds 2.7oz (just weighed) with no magazine ... it is a bucket of parts ... mostly mega arms upper with custom barrel and spikes lower ... PAQ-4c (6 oz) on 12 o'clock ... holosun dot, eotech magnifier ... this is my day gun, but it night capable. It is .223W 10.5 barrel. The upper was $300, the lower was $250.

This is Colt upper and spikes lower, 10 pds 0.8 oz (just weighed) with no magazine ... but that thermal scope is over 2 pounds ... and the Colt upper is not light out of the box with that hefty monolithic rail. A mini-aac (13 oz), a CQBL (8 oz) add to the weight. This is a dedicated night gun. A 5.56 10.3 barrel.

I would go with a pistol configuration- 11.5" I have a few and they are light! I have a cheap Sig M400 11 inch upper with an ALG rail on a Palmetto lower and it shoots great actually and the entire gun cost me under 700! prob. more around 600 honestly and it shoots 1 1/2" groups-2" with a red dot and functions 100%. Or do a battle arms development upper/lower build. That shaves off like 4 oz. I think.

I have reached out to Palmeto Arms with questions on their SR pistols. What they weigh, how they group at 100 yards, etc.

rth 1800, a 10mm 1911 is on my short list for this gun. I just like being able to take an accurate shot at 100yrds or so.

If you're open to pistols to 100y take a look at something in 357Sig. The 229 I used was easy to make center mass shots at 100y holding just high of center. It will never be a rifle, but you can damn sure deploy it with one hand and put 115gr on target to and beyond 100y with open sights. It WILL mess with your low light/night vision as the flame shoots about 4' out of the muzzle.

You patrolling south Texas farm land or something?

Its not just South Texas anymore. Its a cross between, The Walking Dead, Soul Train and La Bamba all at once.

Thought about a .44 mag S&W but leaning to a Springfield Saint Pistol in .223. Its the lightest for the $$$, some youtube vids show acceptable minute of head accuracy at 100 yards.

I second the 300blk, this is my little cheap 7.5" pistol. I keep it in a pelican case in my passenger floorboard. If it were to get stolen it wouldnt be that big of a deal. Hence the cheapo Firefield scope. But it definitely packs a punch and it serves its purpose out to 100yds if needed. I don't know what it weighs but it handles great.

Lots of options...like the pistol and Palmetto recommendations.

15-25 yards...nothing more than 100...I'd save some weight and ditch any or any substantial optics. Especially anything with a battery for a truck gun.

I would say that the weight of the cheap scope I have on my 300blk pictured above is honestly not worth its weight. But I've already sighted it in and it has a lit reticle which is ok for lowlight, not the greatest.

I like having night sights, some do and some don't, ymmv. But trying to shoot at night or late evening irons get really hard to see and impossible to see when it's dark. I have a set of standard A2 irons on my rifle I use for home defense. I did fit trijicon front and two dot rear night sights on it and after a year on there they are about perfect. If you plan on running irons be sure to practice with them. Like anything else they take getting used to if you run mostly optics.

Short and light to swing and fire with either hand, one handed. Shooting inside a car can leave you temporarily deaf (ask me how I know). So you'll want a can. 5.56 because you will want penetrators or green tips when shooting at/through other vehicles. Maybe even through both your vehicle and someone elses. I love 300 blackout SBRs (I have one as my nightstand gun) but I am not aware of a 300 BO round that will go through cars like 62gr green tips.

10mm suuuucks especially at night when you will be blinded by the flash. There's a reason all those MP5s the FBI had built in 10mm have been sitting in the racks for decades. A can can help with the stupid muzzle blast from a 10mm pistol, but then you are at or near AR pistol length, without the green tip option.

Here is my latest project. PSA 10.5" pistol kit, SIG Romeo, Zev lower I picked up for $70, Toolcraft NiB bolt because PSA had them for cheap and they clean up in a hurry... I can detach the can and put it in a computer bag, etc and not worry about it being stolen. Or I can break it all down and fit it into a small bag. Probably have to add an adjustable gas block.

I'll get it up and running during tomorrow's conference calls.

Not with a can.

A can on a 5.56 is making it more friendly. A can on a 10mm is trying (hopelessly) to make up for an endless list of shortcomings that is best and most easily solved by carefully storing it in a dark never to be seen again place.

That seems like an odd and opinionated way of comparing apples to oranges, but whatever works for you I guess.

In reality, 10mm (even from pistol barrels) loaded with AA7 or AA9 can be made to have little or no visible flash. If flash is really the concern...

I mentioned using a can 3 times but you somehow missed it.

I'm not comparing 5.56 and 10mm so much as dismissing 10mm altogether. I didn't think I was being subtle about that. Many years ago I wasted 3 weeks of trigger time with a few thousand rounds of 10mm in pistol and carbine formats shooting at all kinds of targets.

If going through metal there are better choices than 10mm. I will leave this as my only understatement in this thread.

OP, for your stated use case I DO NOT recommend a 10mm loaded with ANY bullet-powder combination over a 5.56, but especially a green tip. Think about shooting through a pillar... or maybe your highway nemesis is in a dump truck... or if you are lucky you have cover behind a wheel or the block and your foe has a 10mm

Palmetto State Armory is the way to go for inexpensive, reliable AR's. I have about $800 into this, but a good chunk of that was the optic, DD irons, and Surefire 3-prong. Put on some cheap MBUS sights and a birdcage and you can save a couple hundred dollars right there. This rifle will shoot about 1 MOA with SSA 69gr ammo.
