What mount is needed to give proper eye relief on an AR15 with a 10X Super Sniper? I'm building a 24" 6.5mm Grendel and have seen pics of guys using regular mounts, which put the ocular past the rear of the reciever, Larue SPR mounts, and even the Larue extra-extended, but who knows if these guys know what they're doing. Which would work best?

Re: Super Sniper on AR- what mount?

I used to have basically the same set up. Super Sniper 10X. 24" barrel AR and I used ARMS #22 throw lever rings in high. This setup put everything right in line for me.

Re: Super Sniper on AR- what mount?

Larue SPR are supposed to be the best. I have a falcon menace in one of those but still waiting on the rifle lol. Rock River takes forever..been 8 months now

Re: Super Sniper on AR- what mount?

Larue's are a little tall for my tastes, I run a USO PosiSlide and Lock mount that is .3" lower than the LaRue.
A good riser rail that gets you forward of the receiver(GG&G, etc,) and a set of regular rings is a great way to go as well.

Re: Super Sniper on AR- what mount?

I'm thinking the Larue LT-104 might be a little high for a 42-44mm obj also.
I going to order a Larue LT-158 same as the 104 except .080" lower, should have it at the end of the week.
I'll post some pic's of it on my RRA Varmint w/ 10x42mm Falcon.

Re: Super Sniper on AR- what mount?

The Recon looks pretty much like the LT 104 in terms of eye relief. Where does it leave the Ocular? About at the edge of the reciever?

Also: what type of shooting are you using it for: off the bench, or prone?

Re: Super Sniper on AR- what mount?

Guys,

your money is better spent on a Badger 22 MOA AR base, and low rings of your liking.

This way you get 22 MOA offset, you install the low rings on this base, and can move the riflescope from a Gas gun to a bolt gun and no adjustment needed on the rings.

Trust me, its the best way to go.

Re: Super Sniper on AR- what mount?

For a QD mount, the Bobro is the best unit on the market. For 30mm rings it has a center height over the rail of 1.52".
The LaRue 104 and 139 are @ 1.5". Note...these will not mount a scope high enough to clear a standard rear folding BUIS.
Depending on which stock you're using, the Armalite 1 piece is a great inexpensive mount, but is low...perfect for an A2 stock with a low cheek weld, but IMO too low for a PRS or M4, VLTOR, or other collapsible stocks.
Other inexpensive but good, solid one piece mounts that are a little taller include the JP and the Burris PEPR. The Burris is tall @ 1.59", and the JP is 1.5".

Here's a link to a real good optics mounting comparison.

Re: Super Sniper on AR- what mount?

I will be using an A1 length stock. My concern with eye relief is that I will be doing most shooting from the prone with this rifle.

I just did some serching for the Badger AR mount and it looks like they are pretty hard to find.

A1 stock and prone will have you really far forward. I just got done setting up my UBR and (for me) laid out prone the longest spot is the best-and that's almost an inch longer than my A2 stock that just came off. A1 is good for offhand, but most of the time prone puts you farther forward.

So the scope needs to be farther forward? I guess I will just have to wait until the rifle is built to see what I need.

Re: Super Sniper on AR- what mount?

I just put an American Defense on mine. I'm not sure how its going to work out just yet but I was looking for some thing that would push the scope forward.

When I shoot highpower with a service rifle I'm used to getting up pretty far on the gun. My nose just touches the charging handle. With the american defense scope mount I can get to where I'm used to being now. Eye relief is fine and it feels pretty good.

I still need to take it out a little more and see if its going to be practical but if its not I can always move it backwards.

Re: Super Sniper on AR- what mount?

for what its worth i vote the larue. i see all these ppl saying bobro but i don't think they are adjustable which i don't like. i run larue's on all my ar type rifles. its easy to switch back and forth and they are indestructible. you need to get behind as many as possible from your buddies rifles and what not and figure which one fits you and your style of shooting the best

Re: Super Sniper on AR- what mount?

I recently went this route too, searching for an AR Badger Riser, of the places I contact, the only place who had it was Steve at Triad. Man, he was on top of his game, I called his cell when he was driving, he pulled over to take my order, and my order went out the next morning.

Excellent service and I really can't complain about the Badger setup. I went with medium rings since my low Badger rings didn't clear my BUIS.

I went with this route since I usually play musical chairs with my scopes. Took it out for it's first test run yesterday, it provided enough eye relief and cheek weld.

I think the advantage of the Bobro is that they don't need adjusting. I have a LaRue and it is easy to see how you could over-tighten the adjusting nut and clamp the mount down so hard on your upper that you can mar it. Also, the LaRue clamps act directly on your upper whereas the Bobro clamp acts on a bar that preses against your upper.

What distances are you shooting at, RU? Is the 16 MOA in the Scout enough to get you there?

PS UPS delivered my Grendel today

The Bobro is designed to not need adjusting, and will compensate for out of spec or worn rails as well. It has a lock on the release lever, and it's also easliy removable with one hand.
If you're just going to put the scope on and leave it on, there's really no need for a QD, but if you have different optics for one rifle, or intend to use the scope on more than one rifle, or just like to take the scope off for storage and/or transport, the Bobro IMO is hands down the best QD unit availablbe. (It even works on Weaver type rails...just don't tell anyone...shhhhhh...

Re: Super Sniper on AR- what mount?

I've got an Armalite 1 piece 30mm mount that I'll sell you for $70 shipped. Let me know if you want to give it a shot.

Here's what it looks like with a 30mm Leupold on an AR.

Re: Super Sniper on AR- what mount?

I think you better hold off until you get the rifle or get behind one that someone else has. Unless of course you are already familiar with that rifle. You need to know how high you want the scope along with the eye relief. You did not mention if you had a rear sight. With the LR 158 I used, I had a MI low profile rear fold down and the scope cleared...it also had 10 moa built in. I am assuming your going to use for just long distance so QD, or rear fold down may not be needed. You may get away with just a pair of rings on your receiver if you want the scope sitting substantially past the charging handle. Just for the record, I always really do my homework with the gun in my possession so I have exactly what I want.

Re: Super Sniper on AR- what mount?

I prefer my cheek weld a little lower. For me the USO Posi-lok works just great. Shown here with a USO ST-10, but it works with my SS 3-9 just as well (even better, in fact.)
