Suppressed AR = gas piston?

I have herd it both ways about running a gas piston with a can. Some say the can is still under pressure when the bolt unlocks and crap blows back through the barrel.

Others say gas piston is the latest n greatest blah blah blah but if you have an adjustable gas system it allows you to tune the gun for the can.

Im looking at this from the aspect of overall weapon performance primarily and stopping gas blow back secondary.

Re: Suppressed AR = gas piston?

Both systems blow back gas down the barrel when suppressed. If they have an adjustable gas system, you can virtually shut the gas off to in effect turn your gas gun into a single shot/bolt gun. or you can adjust/tune either system to just cycle and eliminate most of the gas in the face I have a Noveske switch-block in a 6.8 which is DI and a LWRC M-6A3 which is a piston setup. they both work well. (a PRI gas buster charging handle is your friend)

Re: Suppressed AR = gas piston?

I was thinking of going to a piston upper but I dont like all the extra moving parts. How much cleaner is it with the piston system than without?

Re: Suppressed AR = gas piston?

I would like to see photos of the same number of rounds shot from both a piston gun and a DI gun with an adjustable gas system (JP / Switch Block / Other).

I have a Switch Block on a 5.56. As a result I get virtually no gas in the face and it is a soft shooter with the block on the suppressed setting. However 200 rounds in a single session and no additional lube - it gets sluggish and it extremely dirty.

If someone with a POF (b/c this is what I am interested in) wants to shoot a set number of rounds in a single session (b/c there is a big difference in the number of rounds a gun will eat in one session vs several sessions without cleaning) and snap some pics for comparison - let me know and I will do the same with the Switch Block.

Even better if someone can point me to pics of the same.

Good luck

Non-suppressed, the piston system is much cleaner, wipe off the bolt, lube and your ready to go. suppressed, they're both dirty

Re: Suppressed AR = gas piston?

I went with a piston system on my 300/221 fireball. Not for blowback but as mentioned above the ability to turn it off. I may not want to hear the bolt every time. I have the glass mounted and i hope to make it to the range in the next few weeks. Rain has spoiled my last 2 opportunities.

I dont have pics, but my LWRC M6-A3 will run flawlessly suppressed for 500rds plus in F/A or semi in 1 session with the gas block adjusted to suppressed, the Noveske gets a little sluggish like yours

Re: Suppressed AR = gas piston?

Been trying to decide myself. Have a m4-2000 that I am waiting for the paperwork to clear. I can either put a switchblock on a existing upper or sell a rifle or two and pick up a LMT or LWRC piston setup. Probably have a month or two left to decide.
