Suppressor for an AI

Hi,

I own a 24" AE MK II and would like to buy a suppressor for it. I don't have a break or suppressor fitted at the moment.

I'm thinking along the lines of Thunderbeast's 30P-1 which seems to get positive reviews but I was wondering if this is still the way to go or is there a good alternative to consider (anything new and exciting come out at SHOT) ?

In terms of cutting/threading options; am I correct in thinking the 5/8x24 is the best way to go and is it best to have the suppressor in hand before asking a smith to do the work ?

I might want to use the suppressor on other rifles, or be able to sell my AI at some stage without the suppressor. I'm also thinking 24" with a suppressor is just too long and will probably have it cut back to 22". I'd prefer not to go shorter than that in case I do decide to sell.

Any advice or guidance would be appreciated.

i would recomend the LEI from the gunshop barnett or the more expensive choice is the brugger & thomet,
both seem to have better reduction compaired to a AI mod [had to take the guys word it was an AI on his gun , quite large but light]

Bonneville, do you have anymore information than I can find below ? What material are these made from, how much do they weigh & length/diameter, what thread do AI use ? Are these available in the US or just UK ?

I went through a similar debate a bit ago. What I came up with is this- the Thunderbeast 30p-1 and SAS Ti Arbiter are both similar in size, weight, and construction (titanium.) Both have gotten positive reviews from those who have shot them. In the end, I went with SAS because:
A.) AI North America tested them extensively as well as others, and ended up going with them.
B.) No one could tell me how the 30p-1 was in any way better, but it costs $400 or so more.

If I were in the market again though, I would certainly consider the new AWC THOR. I have heard nothing but good things about them, and they have some impressive technology. They will be out soon, for similar money to the Thunderbeast.

As for your barrel length question- I had mine on my factory 26" barrel, and it worked fine, it was just very long. I ended up getting the factory barrel cut back to 18.5, and I have run it on both 18.5 and 20 inch barrels. If you are getting the barrel threaded already, that would be a good way to go, especially if you don't need the extra 16fps per inch or so.

Are you in the US yet? I'm assuming you are planning on buying this once you move over here?

I'm there on Sunday for a week then come back to get the family. Much trickier for me to buy in the US than Europe oddly enough but I'm probably going to get it Stateside but i might have to go down this Trust route aaagghh.

I spoke to the AI distributor in the UK today and he's keen to show me the new AI manufactured model. He says it is slightly thicker than the current version but this one is interchangeable between 308 and 338 and will cost less than the Thunderbeast too but to be fair to Thunder i've never heard a bad thing said about them.

bonneville - there is almost no information on the AI suppressors on the AI website adn, as T.J says Graeme has no tech specs available on the Sporting Services site.

I have a .308 AW suppressor on order from Graeme.

I'd really appreciate any information you could post here on weight, length, performance (noise reduction and any loss in MV) - or if you're not keen on posting, please can you PM?

Hi,

I have just placed an order for an AE MKII with a 20" barrel. I was unsure about what suppressor and the availability of the Thunderbeast 30P-1 in the UK so went with the Sporting Services MAE model.
The MAE details are www.mae.co.nz/product/aw_7.62_nato/ and is fabricated from stainless steel.
I will not receive the suppressor unit April along with the rifle so will give you an update then.
I would be interested to hear if any one else has used this suppressor and how it performs.
All my sporting rifles have the ASE UTRA JET-Z suppressors and I am very happy with their performance.

You can't really go wrong with any good 308 suppressor IMO. I have a AAC 762-SD on mine now and there is no POI shift between suppressor on and off but mine if the old 18 tooth and the springs wear out very easily so I have a Thunder Beast on order with Sotexhunter here on SH. I wanted something that didn't use any springs and was titanium for the weight savings since the rifle is already a pig. I would have gotten a SAS because I really like their QD system but they weren't available.
