Suppressors Suppressor leave it on or take it off?

I just picked up my new TBAC 30P-1. It's going on a Savage 10 BAS/K. Everything mounted fine, My question is it ok to take the suppressor on and off the rifle for transport or once mounted leave it on.

On and off is fine.

Use a thread protector on the rifle when the can isn't on.

I was concerned about POI change, Didn't know if it would change or not. My drag bag is now to short and was just wondering if it would be bad on the can and the barrel threads.

POI won't change.

Much easier to transport with the can dismounted. That's why drag bags have pockets.

Keep the threads clean and protected, off and on won't hurt them.

Grasslands are waiting.

A properly made suppressor will have a repeatable POI shift, when removing and re-attaching.

Leaving a suppressor on the barrel might cause corrosion issues, there have been barrels/barrel crowns which have been damaged both here in Finland and for example in the UK.

Our advice is to remove the suppressor when it is possible to do so.

I have to take mine off because the rifle and suppressor won't fit into the safe together. I have not seen any POI change between taking it on or off. I have the same POI change every time between off and on.

Suppressors left on especially in a safe will most likely hold enough condensation to pit the crown of your barrel. I know a fellow who went to the range, shot his LTR and left the suppressor on over night in his truck @ the hunting camp. Next day the barrel was dripping wet inside the bore with some rust.

Either way, pull a bore snake through it before shooting.

Most I have seen will take a few rounds to be dead on your suppressed zero after the initial install. It has to do with the harmonics of the barrel. Speaking of as much as 1 moa in some cases.

Just pay attention to where the rounds go and log them.

Shoot 5 rounds unsuppressed. let cool
Install suppressor
Shoot 5 rounds, let cool
remove suppressor
shoot 5 rounds

Thank you all for your input. Trust me this suppressor is made correct. I have heard about the mositure issue. I will just take it off to store and transport as Shane states, He made the thing @ TBAC. By the way Shane the quailty of this thing is great. RayDog called me back this AM and told me to leave the stock crush washer from the brake off.

I've seen some really bad pitting on a friends rifle from leaving the suppressor on. He had to cut off 2" of barrel, crown and rethread. Mine comes off after every session.

As always before shooting for the first time, remove the bolt and look down the tube with the can on to make sure can is on true. I know the can is good but I don't know who did your threads. I've seen some not so good thread jobs out there that will cause strike.

i always take mine off after each shooting session because its too long to fit in my soft case. also the reason why i went with the QD Phantom instead of a thread on model.

make sure if you do plan to leave it attached that your bolt is open or you'll have some nasty gas build up.

Odd, but no one mentioned the other ramifications that could ensue if caught carring around a suppressed rifle. I would just think it prudent to take the can off at all times not using it.

What would those be? I see no issue with having a suppressed rifle as long as you have your paperwork for the suppressor itself. Maybe your rules are different than ours.

I would take it off for two reasons. One mechanical and one legal.

In that it would potentially allow for foreign material to build up in the thread/can interface and the potential for corrosion I would take it off to keep that interface clean and low me to inspect it on a regular basis.

The legal side is that a suppressor is a item that requires you to have paperwork on. I believe it goes so far as to say that said paperwork must be in your possession when you are using the item. In that I do not carry all my Form 1 and Form 4 with me at all times I would like to make sure I am aware of what I have and when I have it out with me.

The problems that could arise from carrying a rifle with a suppressor are many.
Local LE are usually not aware of F3-F4 etc. so you could find yourself doing a lot of explaining,
You could have problems with game wardens etc. Just makes sense avoid conflict any time you can IMO. If you are just going to the range, not likely a problem. I still would not do it.

There is nothing that says that you have to have your paperwork with you...

I've been stopped / checked a few times by local police, and have never had my paperwork with me...

machineguns, grenade launchers, suppressors, SBR's, SBS's, and AOW's... not a stitch of paperwork and never more hassle than a regular traffic stop.

NOW, your mileage may vary, you may be an asshole or your police officer may be an asshole... but I've never had a problem.

You can call your wife and have her bring the paperwork to the station if you had to I guess

I found this on an NFA information website. I have always heard it's a good idea to have your paperwork with you. I just looked at the Form 4 and the quote within the quote is on the form. You may not have a problem with a police officer, but it seems an (almighty?) ATF agent could make a stink about it.

ETA: When you guys say carrying a rifle around with a suppressor could be a problem, what are you talking about. I mean you have to have the suppressor with you to get from your home to the range, what differences does it make if it's on the gun or in a pouch?

Having to thread the suppressor on and off can damage threads over a period of time. I need to take mine off since I live in Washington State (you can own a can but can't use it) and need to shoot it in state too.

Does anyone know who makes a suppressor with a quick attachment that is any good?

I agree that the suppressor can cause some corrosion if left on due the nature of use and heat cycles. So a quick disconnect system should be the answer, I know I have seen them at the SHOT but don't know who's system is the best.

i have used the Gemtech HVT bi-lock. its quicker...than my YHM QD, but the YHM has the rachet style threads and it locks on MUCH tighter with no wiggle.
Even if you do plan to leave a can attached...id still take it off after a shooting session to air out before baggin, boxin, casing or safeing.

most places make good QD versions. everyone has their favorites.

Decoy-ive heard that rule about your state. What does a guy do with a can that he can own...but cant use? expensive paper weight? or do you just take it out, use it, and take it off and put it away? seems like a long discussion with Johnny Law just waiting to happen. Or a crooked way of setting people up.
That's like selling a woman some shoes and saying she cant wear them unless she leaves the state.

The law is very questionable but since I live near the state border I can just cross over and shoot in Oregon. I'm going to talk to our representative and see if they can get a change in the works. I'll check out Gemtech.

I agree that a suppressor shouldn't be left on a rifle for storage. Condensation can be a big problem.

I have always taken my cans off anyway. Why leave it on to transport, then have to take it off to clean the rifle's barrel.

I'm new to suppressors. Is leaving it off still recommended for modern guns and suppressors? I was planning to leave it attached long term when its at home or in a travel bag. I have a Sig Rattler + Nomad 30 w/Cherry Bomb QD.

Edit: Also looking for post-range cleaning suggestions for the suppressor. I've never taken good care of my guns so I'm trying to change that with this pricey setup.

Leaving it attached long-term is not a big deal, but at the very least, I would remove it and then reinstall it after your rifle cools down at the end of each range session or hunt, just to ensure no carbon-lock happens and you don't get your can stuck on your rifle and your CAN'T remove it. Then it becomes really fun trying to separate them without damaging anything. I leave one of my Sandman-S cans attached to my 7.5" Saint 5.56 pistol because it's my "nightstand" gun. But I remove it and reinstall it after each time I go to the range just to ensure no heat expansion lock or carbon lock happens, and I clean the KeyMo mating surfaces on the taper to ensure a clean proper fitment each time. Doesn't take but a few seconds to give them a quick wipe with a RemOil cloth.

Also, remove the suppressor before cleaning the rifle. DO NOT attempt to clean your rifle (or pistol) with your can still attached.

I cannot store my rifles with cans on them in my safe, but when they come out for a range trip, the can goes on before the rifle(s) goes in their case. Just one less thing to pack, bring, and setup when I go.

I leave all my direct thread precision rifle suppressor's attached until I need to swap them to a different rifle. There's no need to arbitrarily take them off and then put them back on. I also wouldn't try to clean the suppressor after each range session. Weigh it when new, and after it gains 4oz clean it by soaking in CLR for 24hrs at a time. CLR is safe for titanium, steel, and cerakote. Do not use CLR on aluminum or nitrided steel parts. It generally takes me a week of soaking to clean 8oz of carbon out of my TBAC Ultra 7 every two years.

Taper style suppressor mounts can have a propensity to get stuck so some people like to break them free after a range session. I only use muzzle devices on ARs that require a P&W for 16" length or if I'm swapping a suppressor that mounts to a muzzle device on a P&W host. If I had one can and one pistol or SBR, I'd just direct thread it. A muzzle device adds weight and length and increases the chance of getting a stuck suppressor.

My TBAC direct thread I pop loose and retighten generally but it hasn’t really been an issue leaving on for a while

My saker 556 asr on the other hand if you do a range session and leave it sit can be a real bitch to remove. To the point I’ve needed the wrenches to break it loose from the muzzle device

But if I loosen the saker and reattach it can sit on the gun without issue for extended length of time. Then again when I use it pop it loose and reattach

I’ve wondered if putting a dab of never seize on the brake would help but hesitant to try it
