WASHINGTON (AP) — Justice Stephen Breyer was robbed last week by a machete-wielding intruder at his vacation home in the West Indies, a Supreme Court spokeswoman said Monday.

The 73-year-old Breyer, wife Joanna and guests were confronted by the robber around 9 p.m. EST Thursday in the home Breyer owns on the Caribbean island of Nevis, spokeswoman Kathy Arberg said. The intruder took about $1,000 in cash and no one was hurt, Arberg said.

She said the robbery was reported to local authorities, but she did not know if an arrest has been made. The U.S. Marshals Service is assisting local authorities and the Supreme Court Police with the investigation, Marshals Service spokesman Jeff Carter said.

Breyer reported on his most recent annual disclosure in June that property he owns on Nevis is worth between $100,000 and $250,000.

The last time a justice was the victim of a crime was in 2004, when a group of young men assaulted Justice David Souter as he jogged on the street in Washington.

In 1996, a man snatched Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg's purse while she was out walking with her husband and daughter near their home in Washington. Ginsburg was not hurt.

The justices return from a nearly month-long recess for a closed-door conference on Friday. They will next meet in public on February 21.

Good.

They sit in judgement of others and enforce crappy laws, and answer to a government that can't get it's own act together.

And if the government can't get it's own act together, who is it to tell me anything?

They are the problem, not the solution to, a ton of problems in this bankrupt, formerly great, formerly powerful country.

The self-righteous judge was damn lucky he didn't meet his executioner.

I think somebody is grossly underreporting. Hmmm ...</div></div>

He must be living in a shoe box in the middle of the road. Anything decent there is well towards 3/4 of a mill and up.

Uhmm...my guess is that's pre-construction, pre-civilization prices. Can anyone say "off-shore bank account"? Don't you wish our lawmakers & justices had to abide by the same laws we do? From what I understand its gorgeous there....

An update from The St. Kitt's-Nevis Observer...

Feb. 11 -- An agent with U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) is presently in Nevis in relation to the armed robbery of a Judge of the United States highest court.

Police confirmed that on Thursday (Feb. 9) night sometime after 10, a masked intruder wielding a machete robbed a sitting U.S. Supreme Court Justice at his Golden Rock vacation home.

According to information reaching this media house, the robber stole a total of about US$1200 and fled the scene without further confrontation.

The Judge, The Observer was told, is a regular vacationer to the island and was traveling with his wife and several friends on this sojourn.

The Observer understands that the U.S. Federal Agent arrived in Nevis on Friday, however it was not confirmed if he is observing the local law enforcement’s handling of the case or working in conjunction with Nevis police.

Information reaching this publication is that Nevis police had been notified of the Judge’s presence on the island, as was the custom, however it is unclear if any police officers were assigned as a shadow detail.

The Observer spoke with Assistant Commissioner of Police Robert Liburd who said police are “vigorously” investigating the matter. He informed that no suspects were in custody as of Saturday morning (Feb. 11).

Another foreign national was also the victim of a robbery that same night. An elderly ex-patriot who resides in Morning Star, Gingerland, was beset by three armed masked men and robbed of money and personal items around 9:30 pm, police inform. The homeowner was not injured during the incident.

Police are also investigating a break-in at the Nevis High Court Building on Prince William Street in Charlestown, which occurred between Thursday night and early Friday morning. Reports are that several items, including computer equipment, were stolen.

The Observer was informed that the stolen computer equipment did not contain saved information from the recently concluded high profile Election Petition trial. Friday was the deadline date set by Justice Lionel Jones for the legal teams of the petitioner and the respondents to turn in written submissions before he hands down a decision.

ACP Liburd assured that police were working around the clock to bring these latest and other crimes to swift resolution. He appealed to the general public to come forward with any relevant information or to contact police anonymously via telephone.

Good stuff. Fuck that pos. Let him suffer the fate he intends to force on every American citizen. I wonder if the FBI would send an investigator if it had been a reg American that had been victimized. Wonder what Breyer's stand is on machete control. Hopefully he gets victimized more in his lifetime and suffers the fate of his idiotic political ideology.
